The LA Rams finally have a draft pick on Day 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft, the first time the Rams have enjoyed a Round 1 pick in an NFL draft since using the first overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft to select rookie quarterback Jared Goff. Goff would go on to lead the team to the NFL Playoffs in three of his five seasons with the team, and all the way to compete in Super Bowl LIII.

Of course, that was a long time ago.

Still, eight years is a very long time to wait between Day 1 picks in the draft, and Rams fans are eager to see if the wait was all worth it. But not so fast, it seems, and NFL Insider Peter Schrager has the LA Rams trading back multiple times in the 2024 NFL Draft in Round 1 and ending the night having traded completely out of the first round.

And that is totally unthinkable and unacceptable.

In his mock draft, Peter Schrager theorizes that the Rams accept an offer from the Kansas City Chiefs to drop back from the 19th overall pick to the 32nd overall pick in Round 1. That would require that the Chiefs kick in their Round 2 pick (64th overall) as well. He then doubles down and has the Washington Commanders trading back into Round 1 at 32, giving the Rams another pick in Round 2 (40th overall) and a pick in Round 3 (100th overall).

I believe that Peter Schrage is one of the few NFL Insiders who is truly plugged into what the Rams may do. But this seems like a stretch of the imagination.

But he is not the first to project the LA Rams as an NFL team that trades completely out of Round 1. NFL media analyst Daniel Jeremiah tossed that gauntlet already with his final mock draft on April 24, 2024. In his scenario, he theorizes that the Rams trade picks in Round 1 and 3 for two Washington Commander picks in Round 2.

I'm not sure that I follow the logic in either mock draft proffered by either NFL expert. While there could be an argument for the Rams to trade back and add picks, those scenarios typically only take place if the team has no player on the board with that pick at the perceived value of that selection. In both mock drafts, there are multiple productive prospects on the draft board when the Rams step up to the podium with the 19th overall pick.

Can the Rams trade back in Round 1? Of course. But will they trade completely out of Round 1? I struggle to believe that is the plan. Even if the Rams do multiply their Top 100 selections in the 2024 NFL Draft from four to six picks, is it worth it to surrender key prospects who can make a Day 1 impact for this team?

I cannot believe it happens this way. What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments section of our Facebook page. And as always, thanks for reading.
