Sean McVay might have hinted at his potential successor at Rams preseason game
The Los Angeles Rams sideline will look different for this Saturday's preseason match-up against the Chargers.
Head coach Sean McVay has decided to let assistant head coach Aubrey Pleasant lead the team against the Chargers, noting that Pleasant has "earned this right."
"He's earned this right and it's more of just going through some of the mechanics -- meeting with the officials, handling some of the different things as it relates to timeouts, being able to communicate with both sides."
As for where McVay will be, he'll watch over things from the team's coaching booth. (Editor's Note: An ealier version of this article mistakenly stated that McVay would be in the broadcast booth). Rams fans might know, whenever there have been stories suggesting that McVay might retire or has been flirting with the idea of retirement, broadcasting is usually listed as the next step in his career.
Sean McVay might have hinted at his successor at Rams preseason game
McVay became the head coach of the Rams in 2017, just their second year after relocating from St. Louis to Los Angeles and immediately turned them into Super Bowl contenders. They went 11-5 under him the first year and by McVay's second year on the job, the Rams were in the Super Bowl for the first time since earlier in the millennium.
In McVay's fifth year on the job, the Rams won the whole darn thing, giving the franchise its second Super Bowl title. It was after that Super Bowl victory that the McVay retirement stuff started surfacing and fortunately, it appears as though the Rams coach has had a change of heart over the last year and is committed to sticking with the team that gave him a chance.
That being said, McVay is smart to spend time in the coaching booth, but it might not be long before we see him truly in the broadcast portion of that area. We've seen guys like Drew Brees and Jason Witten retire, go into broadcasting, and lack the charisma it takes to be a commentator.
Hopefully, he will decide to remain the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams for years to come, but at the very least it appears his coaching tree might be about to grow another branch.
