The Los Angeles Rams signed Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason, but the up and down veteran might not be as viable as a backup option in 2024 as we think. Besides the fact that Garoppolo simply isn't all that great, he's an aging QB who has struggled to stay healthy over the years.
He's also doing this during training camp:
Garoppolo did have a nice stretch overall with the San Francisco 49ers, but it became clear that he was merely a product of the system and is truly nothing more than a low-end starter at best. Over his career with the 49ers, Garoppolo had a 38-17 record, throwing for 82 touchdowns against 42 interceptions for a 99.2 passer rating.
Statistically, he did quite well, but when he's not in SF, he doesn't look the same. In 2023 with the Las Vegas Raiders, Garoppolo threw for seven touchdowns against nine interceptions. He was bad, simply put, and the Raiders decided to end that experiment. Overall, it might not seem like a bad idea to have Garoppolo as a backup, but he has not been all that good in training camp thus far for the Los Angeles Rams.
Could LA consider bring in a different QB to take the QB2 reigns? I think it's possible, but where could the Rams turn? Well, the Denver Broncos may have one extra QB that they could be willing to move. Could the much younger Jarrett Stidham be a viable QB option? Perhaps. The one issue among the many with Garoppolo and with the LA Rams QB situation overall is that there isn't a younger-ish QB who could present some sort of long-term stability, or at least serve as a short-term stopgap option.
Stetson Bennett is very likely not that type of option, and with QB Matthew Stafford getting older, the Rams should have come into this offseason with a different mindset at quarterback. They could try to salvage this room if they were to swing a trade for Stidham, who has proven to be, at the very least, a steady backup QB for the Denver Broncos.
Heck, maybe even someone like Davis Mills from the Houston Texans. While I see the logic in eyeing Jimmy Garoppolo as a backup QB, it might not prove to be a viable solution in 2024.
