The LA Rams wanted to address their backup quarterback position with a solid investment in the 2023 NFL Draft. When the LA Rams selected two-time NCAA National Champion quarterback Stetson Bennett in the fourth round of the draft, the belief was that the Rams roster had found a backup quarterback for 2023. And the hope was that the Rams roster may have found a suitable successor to veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Well, just one week into the 2023 NFL season, and that faith is being tested, and that hope is beginning to fade a bit. It's simply how the cookie crumbles in the fast lane of life in the NFL, Rookies have a lot to process, and a lot of pressure. Combine all of those factors into the scenario of a new city, new teammates, and a sudden newfound wealth with new money, and it's a struggle that takes a lot of discipline and mental toughness.

Of course, that his simply the battle that goes on between the ears. There are the constant physical demands of working out, fighting through the stiffness and soreness that comes with the territory, and even fighting through the injuries that come with any physical professional sport. Right now, rookie quarterback Stetson Bennett will have four weeks to recover from what is now designated as a Non-Football Injury.

Bennett adds to Rams early injury woes

Stetson Bennett was clobbered in the third and final preseason game, a 41-0 shellacking at the hands of the Denver Broncos. In that game, Benett opened the game going just four of nine for 14 yards, while suffering one quarterback sack. He was clearly not having a good game and was pulled out for veteran QB Brett Rypien.

Bennett had mixed results through preseason, but entered Week 1 on the inactive list due to soreness in his right shoulder. Now, in Week 2, he has been assigned to the LA Rams Non-Football Injury (NFI) list where he will remain for at least four weeks time.

So why all of the secrecy? What are the LA Rams, and Stetson Bennett dealing with? For now, there are no details, as LA Rams head coach Sean McVay would not share details about the decision:

"Out of respect for him and the situation, I am going to leave all the specifics and particulars in-house. And I want to be able to do that out of respect for that situation, so I am not going to really have any follow-up information or anything that I will give in that regards."

The move creates another opening in the 53-man Rams roster and leaves the Rams precariously thin at quarterback for the next month or so. Whether permanent or not, the LA Rams will need to add an additional quarterback to the Rams roster quickly.

Stay tuned, as this matter is far from over.
