When it comes to the LA Rams backup Stetson Bennett, he needed to start hot in the preseason. And so far, in his opening drive, Bennett is showing complete command of an offense that, as we had hoped, has plenty of weapons to move the football. Bennett's only incompletion in that opening drive was a thread the needle attempt to TE Davis Allen in the end zone, a play that appeared to be tainted with an uncalled penalty for pass interference as a Cowboys defensive back appeared to get a hand on Davis Allen's hip.
The play resuited in kicker Joshua Karty successfully hoofing a 28-yard field goal attempt
Bennett showcased all attributes that the team love about him under center. He completed his first four passes for 42 yards, including a gorgeous 30-yard pass to rookie wide receiver Jordan Whittington. And he converted a fourth-down and short on a five-yard bootleg around the left side that reminded everyone why Rams HC Sean McVay loves to see a dual-threat quarterback on the roster.
But on the second offensive series for the Rams, Bennett tried to force a pass to WR Jordan Whittington, and was intercepted by by Cowboys defensive back Markquese Bell. Bell is returning for his third NFL season, and started in eight games in the Cowboys defense in 2023.
While the Rams are playing nearly an entirely inexperienced crew in this preseason game, the Dallas Cowboys may not be playing starters, but are fielding plenty of veterans with significant NFL experience.
The goal of preseason games for the team is to get experience for less experienced players. In that regard, this contest has been great for the Rams roster, as the team has been exposed to a variety of game scenarios on both the offensive and defensive side of the football.
The Rams defense has shown solid resolve so far, keeping the Cowboys scoreless after a Bennett interception.
After Quarter 1
The Rams have the football to open the second quarter deep in their territory. But after the interception, Stetson Bennett has completed three straight passes.
Stay tuned. And thanks for reading.
