The LA Rams need to pull the trigger on signing this free agent OT right now
By Bret Stuter
How often do the stars align perfectly for the LA Rams and a proactive front office? Perhaps more often than many NFL analysts care to admit. If you have paid attention to many of the team's last minute free agency signings, or trades, there is a bit of 'rabbits out of hats,' afoot. What I mean to say is that as the team needs a player at a specific position to fill a critical and urgent need, that player seems to manifest himself to some form of availability.
Right now, the LA Rams need an offensive tackle. Well, a need may be understating the fact. This team is in desperate need of an offensive tackle. You see, right now both starting offensive tackles are unlikely to suit up for Week 1. LT Alaric Jackson is suspended for two games. Meanwhile, RT Rob Havenstein has been fighting through an ankle/foot injury for weeks, with no time of his healing and suiting up in sight.
It's time to light up the Bakht-signal.
In March 2024, the Green Bay Packers released long-time All-Pro LT David Bakhtiari, due to a succession of knee injuries/surgeries that had plagued him throughout his 11-season NFL career. It was the final surgery, his fifth, that seemed to trigger the decision from the Packers to part ways with Bakhtiari:
The LA Rams are not shy about taking a flyer on a guy trying to turn the corner after injuries and surgeries. Just take a look at how the team willingly added CB Ahkello Witherspoon after his injury and ACL injury. Or this season with the team adding CB Tre'Davious White after years of injuries and surgeries.
Is All-Pro LT David Bakhtiari a greater risk?
Desperate times call for desperate measures. Right now, the Rams need an offensive tackle in the worst way. And one that is as proficient and accomplished as All-Pro David Bakhtiari would absolutely check all of the boxes.
Instantly.
And Bakhtiari is eager to sign with a team that will boast the next Super Bowl MVP.
This is a textbook case study in supply and demand. Bakhtiari is the supply, and he is in demand by the LA Rams right now.
In the end, who is kidding who? This is the type of dramatic alignment is exactly the type of scenario that Rams GM Les Snead loves to pull off at the Nth hour. Signing Bakhtiari now not only adds depth to the Rams precariously thin depth at offensive tackle, but he instantly becomes an upgrade to the entire offensive line
It's a perfect Hollywood script. Turning a weakness into an instant strength is such a Les Snead scenario. In the end, David Bakhtiari is the ultimate solution to a serious problem. Let's hope for news soon.
And as always, thanks for reading.
