The LA Rams backup quarterback position has been a spot of heated debate and broad-ranging speculation for fans. And the conversation has not subsided since the team traded former starting quarterback Jared Goff, and multiple valuable draft picks, to the Detroit Lions in exchange for starting quarterback Matthew Stafford. If anything, the debate over the backup quarterback spot has gotten even louder and more passionate.
And then there is the ongoing drama associated with now second-year back Stetson Bennett. Yet, some fans have grown weary of Bennett as a topic recently. But this is the off-season, so off-field topics are fair game. Besides, the career track of the young quarterback has been anything but routine. As such, he has required frequent articles to highlight what we know, don't know, and what fans have speculated about his NFL career so far.
And then there is the rote popularity about the guy who has become so unpredictably mysterious throughout his football career. After all, how can you resist reading about a football player who turned down a full scholarship to attend college because he wanted to compete in a big-time football program. Who can help but root for a guy who walked onto the football field of the Georgia Bulldogs, hoping to earn a roster spot with their team? And who can turn away from the Cinderella story of that same determined player who would lead that team to not one, but two consecutive National Championships?
This is the stuff that Hollywood blockbuster trilogies are made of: Rocky, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings, and even The Hobbit.
Everybody wants to pull for the underdog, perhaps out of the way we see ourselves as outcasts or overlooked talents in our own lives. But even beyond that, it's simply human nature to cheer for long odds. Until now, the hope that Stetson Bennett would carry over his collegiate overachievement to the NFL on the Rams roster has seemingly dimmed of late.
But there are signs that hope will bear fruit now. And best of all, they are not from the Rams PR department, but rather from recent experience of the Dallas Cowboys, and young quarterback Trey Lance.
