The LA Rams stand at a record of just 1-2. While that is not an excellent start to the 2023 NFL season, the LA Rams have been playing far better football than their record has shown so far. Still, if the season were to end right now, the LA Rams would be making the 15th overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft (per Tankathon.com).

From that lofty spot in next year's draft, the Rams could be in a prime position to land one of the top quarterbacks in the draft. Whether or not that is a position that the LA Rams wish to address early in the draft is not the point to debate this early in the Rams season. Rather, the point is that that Rams have a lot of valuable assets at their disposal for the 2024 NFL Draft and beyond.

There is more to address about the future Rams drafts. You see, we cannot ignore the fact that the LA Rams have participated in two trades since the end of the 2023 NFL Draft, both of which have the potential to impact the LA Rams' future drafts.

Rams trade for Pittsburgh Steelers OL Kevin Dotson

With the 2023 NFL season upon the LA Rams and the irrefutable evidence that second-year interior offensive lineman Logan Bruss was not prepared to compete in the NFL this season, the LA Rams finally consummated a long-sought trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers for veteran interior offensive lineman Kevin Dotson. To acquire Dotson, the Rams had to agree to involve two draft picks and accept two Steelers draft picks.

So what did that trade look like?

The exchange did not deplete the number of Rams picks, but it did extract significant value. The Pittsburgh Steelers are 2-1, while the Rams are currently 1-2. That means that as it now stands, the LA Rams have potentially traded the 112th overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft (before awarded compensatory picks) and the 148th overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft (before awarded compensatory picks) for the 166th overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft (again, before awarded picks) and for the 207th overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft (before awarded picks).

Of course, there are many factors that can and will change over time. But as it stands now, the LA Rams have traded the equivalent of a fourth round pick for interior offensive lineman Kevin Dotson. Unless the guy comes in and performs at a level of being in Pro Bowl discussions, that seems like an incredibly steep price to pay for a backup lineman who was not even assured of getting a spot on Pittsburgh Steelers roster.

We will also need to consider the Cam Akers trade, but draft picks involved in that trade are both conditional and complex. The picks involved are exclusively in 2026, so we will address the conditions for that trade in the appropriate slide.
