What does a perfect scenario for LA Rams in 2023 NFL Draft look like?
By Bret Stuter
Scenario III/IV: Offensive Skill Weapons
I'd like to say that there is no way that the LA Rams add offensive weapons with the 36th overall pick, but I've watched this team appear to have critical needs at many positions entering an NFL Draft, but end up choosing a wide receiver or running back whose learning curve limits their opportunities. So let's flip this into a golden opportunity to add a consensus playmaker. The fun qualities of these two scenarios are that the Rams could land one of the 2023 NFL Draft's Top-3 playmakers at either WR or RB if the board falls correctly
Scenario IV: WR Zay Flowers
Will Boston College wide receiver Zay Flowers fall to the LA Rams at 36? That's not something I would bet a great deal of money on, but there is enough of a chance for it to make one of five perfect scenarios for the LA Rams draft with their 36th overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft. Why? Well for starters, it's nearly impossible to find any 2023 draft board where Flowers is not among the Top-20 rookies prospects.
Flowers is not a prospect who will excite LA Rams fans who are still waiting for WR Tutu Atwell's breakout season, but Flowers has a much larger spectrum of offensive uses that warrants a celebration if he falls to the Rams at 36. He is a dangerous weapon as a deep threat, as a possession receiver, as a running back, and even as a punt return specialist.
If you believe that the Rams addiction to select an offensive weapon is inevitable, then Zay Flowers has to be at the top of the list purely from his swiss-army knife utility. Because he is dangerous anywhere in the offense and at almost any position, he is the type of low-risk high-reward offensive weapon who is difficult to pass up if he is there at 36. At 5-foot-9 and 182 pounds, he is not exactly a hulking body on the outside. But he has proven to have solid durability, plays larger than his size, and gives the Rams offensive genius plenty of potential to scheme around.
Scenario III: RB Jahmyr Gibbs
Whether or not you believe in the combination of LA Rams veteran running backs Cam Akers and Kyren Williams to deliver a potent ground game, the chance to add a third running back to the Rams posse of fresh running legs would be too good to pass up if Alabama running back, Jahmyr Gibbs falls to the Rams at the 36th overall pick.
While not exactly a big burly back, Gibbs has the potential to be a true NFL playmaker as early as his rookie season. GIbbs is ideally suited for the Rams offense as he is incredibly effective in attacking the defensive perimeter, widening the field and delivering huge as a special team returner
While Gibbs may not excite every LA Rams fan if his name is called out with the 36th overall pick, he should. The LA Rams need to add talent, upgrade the roster wherever possible, and plan to fill vacancies that will appear on the Rams roster in 2024. RB Jahmyr Gibbs checks all of the boxes
GIbbs may fall to the Rams at 36 due to questions about his workload and durability. But the Rams roster is an ideal landing spot, as the team has the right mix of complementary rushers to keep him fresh and effective. And best of all, he is the type of running back who is most dangerous running routes and catching passes. If there is a perfect Sean McVay-like rusher in the 2023 draft class, that rusher is Jahmyr Gibbs.
