If you are tracking hos the LA Rams quarterback situation is sizing up, you know that veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford is coming back to lead this offense with a vengeance. And behind him, it's pretty obvious that rookie quarterback Stetson Bennett will be the LA Rams primary backup quarterback. Behind him, there is veteran backup quarterback Brett Rypien, who may or may not make the LA Rams 53-man roster as a third-string veteran quarterback.

But what of rookie quarterback Dresser Winn? I mean, after all, he's not getting any offensive snaps in preseason games. And as a raw rookie quarterback, he's buried on the LA Rams depth chart. But what if there is more than meets the eye to this young quarterback?

To be fair, it's a question that we have been asking since the Summer of 2023 began. And we still haven't gotten a satisfactory answer just yet:

So it looks like we'll have to do some digging around . . .

There's more to Dresser Winn than you think

On the surface. rookie quarterback Dresser Winn appears to be a victim of the NFL numbers game. A player who is sitting as the fourth-ranked player at a position with no more than three roster slots available to fill. And that could be the end of it. But before we write the young man off completely, know that he is a young quarterback who has a cannon for an arm.

Just check up this wind up and hail mary touchdown pass from the 50 yard line for UT Martin:

But he is more than just a raw cannon-armed rookie quarterback. He is also an accomplished backup punter, and that makes him a sneaky but versatile player to have around, even if that means having him stashed away on the LA Rams practice squad:

No, the LA Rams do not have an unending limit to the number of players that can be carried on the team's 16 player practice squad. But we know that Dresser Winn has the ability to cover two roles in one slot.

He can serve as the LA Rams emergency quarterback if veteran QB Matthew Stafford is injured, and the team needs a player to back up rookie Stetson Bennett. At least until the Rams front office can add a veteran QB and the Rams coaching staff can get him up to speed.

But he can also serve as an emergency backup punter, again with the opportunity to hold down the fort until the Rams front office can address the position with a free agent signing. Come to think of it, perhaps Dresser Winn is more valuable to the LA Rams roster than first meets the eye.

You may not be hearing much about Dresser Winn because he simply was added to the Rams roster to get the team through training camp. But the Rams may have a need to develop a strong-armed quarterback for the future.
