II: Can one of Rams pass rushers crack Top 30 in quarterback sacks?

Getting after the quarterback feels like a top priority of the Rams young defense in 2024. Pressuring quarterbacks helps in so many ways. Not only does in result in a loss of yards and down for the play itself, but more pressure means less time to throw, driving down completion rates and yards per completion from opposing offenses. It even increases the chance of an errant throw, giving the ball-hawking defensive backs a much better chance of purloining passes.

But who of the Rams pass rushers have a shot at cracking the Los Angeles Rams Quarterback Sack Career Leaders Top 30?

Well, before we name names, what is the career record for quarterback sacks currently, and who hold the record? The current career record at 30 is 19.5 quarterback sacks, held by former outside linebacker Isaiah Robertson. So who is within striking distance of that mark? Let's run down the list of current Rams players who could flirt with or best that mark this year:

  • OLB Michael Hoecht - Currently 10.5 QB sacks | Needs 9.5 QB sacks
  • DT Kobie Turner - Currently 9.0 QB sacks | Needs 11.0 QB sacks
  • OLB Byron Young - Currently 8.0 QB sacks | Needs 12.0 QB sacks
  • ILB Troy Reeder - Currently 5.0 QB sacks | Needs 15.0 QB sacks
  • DE Desjuan Johnson - Currently 2.0 QB sacks | Needs 18.0 QB sacks
  • DT Larrell Murchison - Currently 2.0 QB sacks | Needs 18.0 QB sacks

Of course, any rookie who burst onto the NFL scene can move up the ladder pretty quickly. But they are unlikely to hit a Top 30 spot in just one season.

For my money, I believe that second-year OLB Byron Young has better than a 50/50 chance of claiming a Top 30 spot. While Michael Hoecht is technically closer, I believe his number of defensive snaps will erode quickly in 2024 to make room for rookie pass rushers. And DT Kobie Turner, now one of the defensive captains, will face a lot of attention from opposing offensive coordinators and linemen.

Byron Young enters 2024 far more polished in his technique, and far more dangerous. And with the notoriety of Kobie Turner, and rookies Jared Verse and Braden Fiske, there is far less focus on him this season. That is a perfect storm for a huge season out of him this year.
