It seems as though the LA Rams' plan was to go with second-year quarterback Stetson Bennett all along. At least, that is what you could logically conclude now that OTAs, training camp, and the preseason have all come and gone. The Rams were always committed to veteran QB Matthew Stafford for the 2024 NFL season. And with the team adding veteran QB Jimmy Garoppolo to handle the primary backup quarterback duties, the team had essential covered the mid-season mishap trend that has befallen this team over the past two seasons.

But there was one fly in the soup. Jimmy Garoppolo was notified that he would be suspended for the first two games of the 2024 NFL season. That was public knowledge before the Rams signed him to the team. The team also signed former practice squad quarterback Dresser Winn to the team. On paper, the team had four quarterbacks throughout training camp.

But for Weeks 1 and 2 of the season, it will all be down to Matthew Stafford and Stetson Bennett. You see, the team waived Dresser Winn.

That comes as no surprise. Despite the protests of some vocal fans, the Rams were always going to stick with Stetson Bennett as their backup quarterback. He was with the team throughout the 2023 training camp, and then he stepped away from the game for nearly a full year. That reset his progress to the early days of his collegiate career at the University of Georgia. And yet, he only played two preseason games but ended the preseason with the second most passing yards in the NFL.

Say what you will, but that proficiency goes a long way in the eyes of the Rams coaching staff.

The team may sign QB Dresser Winn to the practice squad, at least early in the season. He has been with the team in some capacity over the past 1.5 seasons, so it makes sense to have him in the bullpen.

But for now, the team is entrusting the quarterback room to two former Georgia Bulldogs. Now we just sit back and see where that takes the team.
