With Rams cornerback crisis, here are three instant FA options to help this team
By Bret Stuter
When it rains, it pours. Or so it seems when you consider how injuries that have impacted the LA Rams this season seem to be focused on the offensive tackle and cornerback positions. The LA Rams loaded up with depth at many positions, and the roster overall is as talented and as deep in many years. But with the incessant injuries at specific positions, this team has to act, and act quickly.
Right now, the Rams have placed veteran cornerback Darious Williams on IR. The team had to place CB Derion Kendrick on IR for the season already. And Cobie Durant is nursing a hamstring injury. Even veteran CB Tre'Davious White, is coming back from an Achilles Tendon injury. The only players currently on the roster who are healthy at cornerback are undrafted rookie cornerbacks Josh Wallace and Charles Woods.
The roster is inching closer to the edge of disaster with one more injury. That a huge problem.
But painted into a corner is when Rams GM Les Snead is his most dangerous. He has mastered the art of crisis management. And there is no cause to doubt the wizard of waiver wire now. So who could the Rams sign quickly to help solve this cornerback conundrum? I have three players who could be of instant assistance.
Cameron McCutcheon
Perhaps the simplest solution is the best one. The LA Rams had just released cornerback Cameron McCutcheon, despite a respectable preseason performance. Perhaps urgency to restock the position demands a plug-and-play defensive back who knows this defense intimately? While he has never made it past the team's practice squad, he has had two preseasons in this Rams defense, and was targeted 16 times, allowing just six receptions.
He is 6-foot-1 and 201 pounds, and has plenty of 'Rams' knowledge. While he is not All-Pro caliber, he is both affordable and game-ready. Sometimes now is better than later.
Ahkello Witherspoon
Whatever the reason for not re-signing veteran cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, there has to be some point where the threshold for bringing him back into the fold makes sense. I'd day that threshold has been crossed. I believed that while Witherspoon slumped a bit late in the season, his 48.1 percent catch rate was outstanding. And his size of 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds is an ideal height.
Witherspoon knows the drill, signing on with the Rams late in 2023 and yet earning a starting role. This year is simply a second verse of that same song and dance. The Rams need a cornerback, and Witherspoon needs a team. This should be the time to reunite.
Patrick Peterson
While he is a free agent, 13-year veteran cornerback Patrick Peterson is still very interested in starting at cornerback for a team. The question now is whether he will trial his services for a team in need of a temporary starter. Perhaps that could be enough to add the former Arizona Cardinals All-Pro defensive back.
Released after one season from the Pittsburgh Steelers as a cost-cutting move, Peterson allowed just 38 of 64 passes to find their mark, while generating two interceptions, breaking up 11 passes, and recording 42 tackles.
While Peterson may be 34 years old, it's tough to deny that he could be a huge boost to the secondary, if only on a temporary basis.
