When it comes to the Los Angeles Rams, there is more than meets the eye to many of their players. We have staunchly supported WR Tutu Atwell, who seems to have far more upside than the offense is comfortable in allowing him to realize. The team has benefited for two consecutive seasons from the willingness of veteran defensive back Ahkello Witherspoon to join the Rams roster late in the offseason, but makes no effort to extend him so that he gets the benefit of a full training camp working with his teammates to prepare for a new season.
And then there is the case of Bobby Brown III, a player who fills a vital role on the defense by his outstanding performance as a blocker-gobbling run-stuffing defensive lineman who engages multiple blockers, and allows his teammates to make the plays.
But Brown jumped on social media recently to indicate that he is chafing at the bit to fill a more well-rounded role with the team. And despite a flattering write-up from the team's reporter Stu Jackson, Bobby Brown considers it a 'backhanded compliment.'
As much as I like this post. I don’t cause I’m more than a run defender just never on the field and that’s all I’m going to say on that just a backhanded compliment. https://t.co/16fRgUhY0Z

While he made his point with that lone social media comment, Brown does not stand pat on saying less. In truth, he goes on to be a bit critical of the way that the team has used him over the years. And he drives that point home with his second social media protest:
@StuJRams this is not a knock on you my guy but you only can talk about what it seems like the 1 and only thing I’m good at because that’s all I’ve ever been allowed to do

It's not that the Rams try to cattle shoot a guy who wants to perform a well-rounded role on the defense. But the team is certainly going to place players into roles that they are most likely to succeed at. Furthermore, while blocker-gobbling may be under-appreciated by NFL fans, it is an essential role that is absolutely appreciated universally by NFL coaches.
I had initially thought that the Rams might queue Bobby Brown III and his stalwart defensive presence as the next player to be due for an extension. Now, after having some time to mull this over, I'm not so sure. I love the attitude of any player who wants to do more for the team, and I respect that whole-heartedly. But I don't believe that the Rams are particularly enamored with anyone who airs dirty laundry publicly. The team prefers to keep those tough conversations in house.
NT Bobby Brown III may be adept at more than the Rams have tasked him with performing. But the team needs to have someone engage offensive linemen, stuff the run, and clog up the running lanes. If the Rams defense is to work, everyone must fill their role.
If Bobby Brown is unhappy at the way the Rams coaches have been using him, he will have an opportunity to sign with a team that will explore other ways to use his talents. But I fear that he undervalues the ability to stuff the run, to stymie double-teams, and to be that guy in the center of the defense who forces the offense to reroute running lanes. Play to your strengths. Unfortunately, Bobby Brown may pursue a different type of role in the NFL in his next contract: Jack of all trades, master of none.
As always, thanks for reading.
