(4) - LG Steve Avila
While veteran interior offensive lineman Steve Avila has not had a huge book of business in 2024, he is starting to showcase all of the physicality and energy that endeared him to fans in 2023. Since early season injuries, he has competed in the last five games. And per his Pro Football Focus grade, he has played 356 offensive snaps, been called for two penalties, and allowed two quarterback sacks.
But he is improving rapidly. He dominated at the line of scrimmage in Week 14 against a formidable Buffalo Bills defensive front.
If you focus on Steve Avila since his return, you may notice that he is back to his original self in terms of blocking with authority, keeping his head on a swivel, and cleaning up the pocket if any defender starts to break free. He is a keystone in his role of blocking between physical but less-experienced center Beaux Limmer, and veteran punishing left tackle Alaric Jackson.
Avila is like the cooler to his tandem of bouncer teammates, always ready to step in and deescalate a pass rusher with a swift pancake. Best of all, Avila did not play in Week 3. That game was handled by IOL Logan Bruss, a player who is no longer with the team. Bruss struggled against the 49ers, so expect a noticeable upgrade in the Rams offensive line play in Week 15.
Scouting report: I love how Avila matches up in this game. Because the 49er deploy a four man defensive front, Avila will likely face DT Jordan Eliott or Kalia Davis in Week 15. Neither will get a sack against Avila in this one, and the Rams could find plenty of daylight running between the left tackle and guard in this one.
