In 2022, the Los Angeles Rams somehow managed to win three of their first five games. Thanks to an injury-riddled roster, they would go on to win just two the last 11. That 5-12 record was the worst of head coach Sean McVay's career, and nearly drove him to give up the game and walk away.
Flash forward and the 2026 team is 2-4, has been battered by injuries, and is giving off 2022 vibes.
No injuries have been categorized as season-ending yet. But the sheer number of them has forced coaches to manage the roster rather than turn their attention to the growing list of gaffes, errors, and poor decisions that have allowed this team to fall below anyone's worst expectations.
The Rams' 2022 roster was supposed to be jam-packed with superstars. The team already had elite receiver Cooper Kupp, quarterback Matthew Stafford, defensive tackle Aaron Donald, cornerback Jalen Ramsey, and linebacker Ernest Jones IV. To that group they added an All-Pro in Bobby Wagner and former Pro Bowl receiver Allen Robinson.
But Stafford would only last nine games before succumbing to injury, and the season derailed from there.
These Los Angeles Rams are not the team fans expected
The Rams are no longer Super Bowl favorites. They no longer seem likely to make the playoffs. Teams that open a season at 2-4 suffer from greater problems, and this one is no exception. Players are too reckless, play-calling is too rigid, defensive performances are too lopsided, special teams are a disaster, and the entire group is far too inconsistent to sustain a winning streak.
Let's revisit the Rams' schedule. Despite overly optimistic expectations, this team has already lost four games. Worse still, LA is 0-2 against NFC West opponents. They will face thge San Francisco 49ers and the Arizona Cardinals one more time, and the Seattle Seahawks twice.
And based on what fans have witnessed so far, the Rams should be the underdog in each of those games. Yes, even against the Cardinals.
The most winnable games that remain on the schedule come against NFC East Division teams: the Dallas Cowboys (2-4) and the Washington Commanders (1-3-1). Perhaps the Horns can also defeat the hapless Chargers (0-6).
When you add it all up, they could well emerge from 2026 with a record of 5-12. That's 2022 all over again.
LA rebounded after that horrific year with a playoff-worthy team in 2023. But for the majority of fans who still cling to Super Bowl hopes, better buckle your seat belts. The Rams are entering turbulent skies and may suffer a forced descent.
As always, thanks for reading.
