Rams and Cards starting running backs paths diverge in the first half

2 offenses start with their rushing attack. Two starting running backs have entire different games than that of Week 2 so far.

As the LA Rams (9-6) prepared to host the Arizona Cardinals in Week 17, we put our reputation on the line with a host of 7 Bold Predictions as part of the pregame coverage. So far, those predictions are taking shape rather favorably. But the one prediction that I wanted to highlight at halftime is the bold prediction of Kyren Williams will outrush James Conner. If you recall, the Week 2 performances of both running backs were widely different.

Cardinals RB James Conner shredded the Rams defense with 21 runs for 122 yards and a touchdown. Rams RB Kyren Williams ended the game with 12 runs for 25 yards. It's was a huge disparity that was the source of the Cardinals overwhelming victory by a score of 41-10. And to many Fantasy Football owners, the thought starting James Conner against this defense was too good to pass up. That's why I cautioned readers not to be disheartened by Conner's availability in Week 17.

He was questionable for the game with a knee injury. He did suit up and start. But that knee was now cured by a faith-healer. In four runs, Conner was only able to rush four yards. He hauled in two of three passes for four more yards, While some believe the knew bothered him, and it may have, the Rams defense was the bigger issue. The defense swarmed to Conner, and OLB Byron Young brought him down to the ground quickly as soon as he touched the football.

He has since left the game, and is questionable to return.

The Cardinals are trying to fill his vacancy with RB Michael Carter.

Kyren Williams continues to pile up points

The Rams' offense has not been very impressive in the early going. The Rams opened the game with four consecutive punts before momentum changed. But just as hope seemed to fade, the Rams offense started to heat up. With third down and goal-to-go from the Cardinals' one-yard line, Rams RB Kyren Williams was able to plunge into the endzone for the first score of the game.

That became Williams 14th rushing touchdown of 2024. On the night through one-half or regulation play, Williams has rushed eight times for 35 yards and one touchdown.

The LA Rams have not been impressive when the offense has the football in a must win game. But the team did manage to score a touchdown and follow up with a 53-yard field goal booted by rookie kicker Joshua Karty.

I had expected this game to be a high scoring affair. While anything is still possible, the Rams defense has continued to show up with a stingy attitude. The Cardinals offense did manage to score a TD with their first second-half possession. But Michael Hoecht block the PAT, keeping the Rams ahead by four points in the game.
