The LA Rams have entered each of the past two NFL Drafts with a willingness to trade up for elite talent at the tight end position. Forget the fact that the team already has an abundance of tight end talent, and four tight ends on the 53-man active Rams roster at the moment. The team understands that the responsibilities of receivers in the Rams offense are more aptly suited for a pass-catching tight end.
The team was thwarted in the 2023 NFL Draft despite efforts to trade up for TE Dalton Kincaid. The team was frustrated once more in efforts to trade up for TE Brock Bowers in the 2024 NFL Draft. But in both cases, the rookie class of the last two years had one rookie prospect who stood out over the rest of the field. In the 2025 NFL Draft, multiple rookie prospects are very talented in this year's draft class, and several rookie tight ends are good enough to hear their name called out in Round 1.
While I am content for the team to sort through the existing four tight ends currently on the roster to project who will and will not fit plans for 2025, I am not the decision-maker. But I am someone who has seen the Rams front office make a concerted effort to trade up in Round 1 in each of the past two drafts.
Is third time the charm? Well as the saying goes, if at first you don't succeed: Try, try again.
2025 NFL Draft looks very promising
While the Rams front office may have been persuaded to trade up in each of the past two respective drafts, I'm not sure that the team will have a similar set of reasons to trade up in the 2025 NFL Draft. For starters, there is not just one tight end prospect in this rookie class with elite skills. Some draft analysts believe that as many as three rookies have plug-and-play rookie seasons ahead:
While that may or may not be how the LA Rams draft big board takes shape, the truth is that the Rams are currently well-positioned to land one of Top-Three tight ends in the draft if they want to. While I do not pretend to know what the team will do with four tight ends on the roster in 2025 (the Rams are currently projected to lose veteran TE Hunter Long due to an expired contract), the team has been willing to exchange multiple draft picks in the past to add a tight end before.
It's a pattern that I cannot see this team changing in the 2025 NFL Draft.
A Rams selection of a tight end in Round 1 is by no means written in stone. The team has coveted elite tight ends in the past, but every year brings a new shopping list. Will the Rams shop for a tight end in the 2025 NFL Draft? I don't know the answer to that, but third time is a charm.
As always, thanks for reading.
