Rams blocked punt sends SoFi stands into euphoria with unlikely score
By Bret Stuter
The LA Rams entered Week 14 knowing that they needed to have everything go their way to have any hope of a win. The Rams have not beaten the Bills since 2012. Even more concerning for the Rams, the Buffalo Bills entered the game riding the crest of a seven-game winning streak. Over the streak, the Bills offense has routinely scored 30+ points. The Rams offense has only scored 30 points once all season.
On that fact alone, the Rams appeared to be in a no-win situation. I suppose that is why you have to let the games play out.
While the Rams offense has struggled to put bushels of points up on the scoreboard, the Rams defense has not sat idly by. The Rams defense has been very effective at scoring points so far this season. In fact, the team has scored 22 points in 12 games in 2024.
The team just added seven more points. On a fourth down and 10 yards to go on the Buffalo Bills 48-yard play, the Rams special team sent Jake Hummel in to block the punt, and he managed to get a raised hand on the football. What the team could not count on is the presence of TE Hunter Long running right into the vicinity of the loose football.
Hunter Long picked up the loose football and rumbled in for a touchdown.
The Rams are not going to win this game with their standard offensive game plan. The team can only win by being unpredictable, playing fundamentally flawless football, and by excelling on special teams.
The score allowed the Rams to score 17 points in the first half. While we know that is not enough to win the game, it's a huge offensive mark for a slumbering offense. The Rams need to score points. And the defense understands how crucial this game can be in the grand scheme of 2024 NFL season and the team's playoff chances.
The Rams have a 24-14 lead against a Bills team that gives up only 19 points per game.
In the 2nd Quarter
Buffalo Bills 14
Los Angeles Rams 24
