After suffering an injury in the preseason opener, Los Angeles Rams receiver Mario Williams was given the soft shove off the roster. In his place, the Rams signed veteran Alex Bachman.

Curiously enough, Bachman originally joined Los Angeles as an undrafted rookie in 2019. He has spent the past seven years trying to carve out a niche role with four different teams. His quest for an NFL career has finally brought him full circle.

Bachman managed to stick with both the New York Giants (2020-21) and the Las Vegas Raiders (2024-25), splitting his time between receiver and special teams. Sparsely used in games, he amassed five receptions for 43 yards, 23 punt returns for 140 yards, and four kickoff returns for 97 yards.

While Williams' release may have no impact on the Rams' 53-man roster, he was almost certainly destined for the practice squad as an insurance policy on offense and special teams. In that outlook, Bachman seamlessly steps in. But is there more to the signing? Let's explore.

Alex Bachman has ties to both the Rams and Davante Adams

Bachman is rather familiar with the Rams coaching staff. A former teammate of assistant receivers coach Robert Woods, Bachman was also a pupil of senior offensive assistant/receivers coach Eric Yarber. His previous stop with the Rams also exposed him to Sean McVay's offense.

Bachman later earned a roster spot with the Raiders in 2024, when he became teammates of with Davante Adams. While seldom used in the Raiders' offense, he did find a role on special teams returning punts and covering kicks.

It's clear from recent signings that Rams GM Les Snead is keeping special teams depth in his sights. As njuries force the wizard to work his magic on the roster, he has opportunities to reinforce special teams with each replacement signing. Bachman extends the trend of free agent additions who can help upgrade LA's coverage.

First things first. Bachman will be tasked with special teams performance over the final two preseason games. If he can pass that quiz, he could find himself on the practice squad. Bachman is back. Now, it's up to him to determine for how long.

As always, thanks for reading.
