Rams continue to make under-the-radar moves by signing rival receiver

At the NFL trade deadline, Los Angeles Rams general manager Les Snead is in his natural element. While fans await the big headline trades, Snead's best work happens outside of the spotlight. Not every improvement needs to take away the breath of NFL fans. Some of the best moves are the least lauded.

The team traded next to nothing to acquire Tennessee Titans' promising young cornerback Roger McCreary. To make room on the 53-man roster, the team assigned wide receiver Tutu Atwell to injured reserve. That created room on the team for a new wide receiver. While few expected the team to sink significant value into the position with Puka Nacua returning, the team acted almost instantly:

Without Atwell, the offense is limited in its ability to threaten defenses deep. While not possessing 4.22-second 40-yard dash speed, Snead did sign veteran wide receiver Tyler Scott to the practice squad. Scott runs a 4.44-second 40-yard dash. Not great, but not bad either. Early suspicions believe that Scott's initial role will be on special teams, where his speed can help cover punts and kickoffs.

Rams add Tyler Scott immediately after his release from Seahawks

Scott was released by the Seattle Seahawks just four days before signing with Los Angeles. He was on their practice squad, but did not see any action with them. He was originally selected by the Chicago Bears in the 2023 NFL Draft with the 133rd overall pick (Round 4). He appeared in 28 games for the Bears, with four starts.

He is not a particularly productive offensive weapon, with 18 receptions, 173 receiving yards, and catching just 54.5 percent of his targets. He has rushed seven times for 41 yards as well. He was also used in kick returns for the Bears in 2023.

What type of role does LA have planned for Scott? Since he arrived on the practice squad, it could be anything. It's hard to project him as a solution to the offense, as he has little production in his third NFL season. He is likely earmarked for a special teams role, with the upside of developing into an offensive contributor down the road.

If you were looking for a blockbuster trade, this wasn't it. However, this does not rule out the team making additional personnel moves in the future. The NFL trade deadline is rapidly approaching. I would not rule out Les Snead working the phones for more roster help. The question is, when will he make his next move? And where?

As always, thanks for reading.
