The Los Angeles Rams defense is formidable this season. That's not bragging, it's simply the reality. The defense is ranked well on yards allowed (13th), points allowed (third), and quarterback sacks (second). Facing that, the New Orleans Saints have decided to start rookie quarterback Tyler Shough in Week 8 to face the Rams at SoFi Stadium.
Rooke quarterbacks are not expected to play in top form in their debut. With their first experience facing an NFL defense, a rookie under center can expect to see many NFL defensive strategies for the first time. When it comes to defensive coordinator Chris Shula, you can bet that he won't let up because he feels sorry for Shough in his debut.
A rookie prospect out of the Louisville Cardinals, Shough was a controversial quarterback who some viewed as one of the quarterbacks general manager Les Snead might select. Some felt that would be a terrible move. Now fans will have the opportunity to see for themselves whether Los Angeles avoided a draft disaster, or whiffed at selecting a franchise quarterback..
Chris Shula could turn Tyler Shough's first NFL start into a horror show
While the Saints' pass protection has been reasonably adequate so far this season, they have seldom faced a pass rush as fierce as LA's. In Week 8, they allowed five sacks to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, en route to a 23-7 loss. It was that loss that gave Shough real NFL experience, but he was no more effective than starting quarterback Spencer Rattler.
You can expect Los Angeles defensive coordinator Chris Shula to have his defense prepared for this one.
LA's defense has been on fire of late. It has given up just 10 points total over the last two games. With New Orleans sending out a rookie, they may do even better in Week 8. The run defense has been spectacular in 2025, spearheaded by inside linebacker Nate Landman and nose tackle Poona Ford.
That places pressure on Shough to pass, something that the Saints are eager to witness. Of course, Snead just traded for Tennessee Titans' cornerback Roger McCreary, and he may be called to play. The team will be without starting cornerbacks Darious Williams and Ahkello Witherspoon in Week 8
Still, this game will be all about the pass rush, and Los Angeles has one of the best in the NFL. How well can Shough scramble and throw in a dead run? Fans will find out in Week 8. As always, thanks for reading.
