Questions swirl around the Los Angeles Rams' 2025 NFL season, and it's not a good thing as questions multiply as the team prepares for its second preseason game. The Rams continue to strategize the best way to rehabilitate QB Matthew Stafford and get him back on the football field. So far, the team has had very limited success.
While the team approached the Stafford saga as though time was not a factor, entering the second preseason game with no evidence yet that the 37-year-old can don football pads and throw the football effectively is worrisome. The team has scheduled a second stress/tolerance test for the starting quarterback today.
In this exercise, the quarterback is subjected to throwing the football to various depths and from multiple platforms. Coaches, trainers, and medical staff will be present throughout the event. They are there not just to monitor the event, but to solicit feedback throughout the tolerance test if intervention or a diagnosis is required.
The uncertainty of whether Matthew Stafford will play in Week 1 has created a void that some websites are more than happy to fill. One article was so brazen as to list five QBs whom the team could pursue should the veteran starter be unable to answer the bell. But none suit the needs of the team. One can. He is a former Rams quarterback and current UFL MVP, Bryce Perkins.
Bryce Perkins can salvage the Rams season before it falls apart
The Rams roster is beyond the point of getting just anyone up to speed. Either the coaching staff will be forced to dumb down the offense to give a new quarterback addition a limited selection of plays to memorize and execute, or the team is stuck with coaching up a quarterback for the next month or two before he can be expected to contribute.
The team managed to shrink the playbook for QB Baker Mayfield. The coaches were able to coach up QB Carson Wentz over a longer period. In both cases, the team solved a need for quarterback depth by finding the best candidate for the job. In this scenario, Bryce Perkins makes the most sense.
Standing 6-foot-2 and tipping the scales at 215 pounds, he is a dual-threat quarterback who signed with the team after the 2020 NFL Draft. He remained with the team through 2022, getting one start while flashing NFL-level form. But he was released after three seasons, finally joining the UFL Michigan Panthers.
He struck gold in 2025, playing seven games and completing 69 percent of his passes for 1,342 yards and nine touchdowns. He also rushed 47 times for 269 yards and five touchdowns. He just completed the UFL competition in mid-June 2025, so he is still in football form. Best of all, he is a 28-year-old quarterback who is familiar with the offense and players.
Nobody expects a quarterback added to the roster to lead the team to a Super Bowl. No Kurt Warners are hiding in a retail store. But if the team's season seems to be facing disaster, signing Perkins is a Hail Mary pass that could score and turn the team's season around. He's capable. He knows the offense. And he is the UFL MVP. Best of all, he is available to sign right now.
Prepare for the worst. Hope for the best. And for heaven's sake, keep Bryce Perkins' contact information on speed dial. As always, thanks for reading.
