Four years ago, the San Francisco 49ers made a bold trade to move up to the third pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Debates were had as to who the 49ers would take with that selection and Los Angeles Rams fans were very invested in who their rival might take. Ultimately, the Niners decided on North Dakota State's Trey Lance.
This pick ended up being a massive bust for the 49ers, as Lance appeared in just eight games for them and made four starts in two seasons. He was traded to the Dallas Cowboys ahead of the 2023 season and was the third-string quarterback and served in the same role in 2024. Lance appeared in four games for the 'Boys in 2024 and made one start.
With the 2024 season's conclusion, Lance became a free agent and he's still waiting for a new team to scoop him up. Grant Cohn of San Francisco 49ers on SI wrote that Lance's NFL career might officially be over.
"He's a free-agent backup quarterback along with Joe Flacco, Carson Wentz, Drew Lock, C.J. Beathard, Case Keenum and Easton Stick. These all are quarterbacks who might not play in the NFL next season. Which means Lance's NFL career could be over," Cohn wrote.
Rams fans love how badly the Trey Lance pick ended up for the 49ers
As Cohn noted, no one is signing Lance to be a starter at this stage in his career. He's, at best, a backup and that even seems too generous given his lack of production at the professional level.
The only reason the 49ers don't get clowned on more for trading a significant amount to move up to take Lance is that they managed to find a reliable quarterback the very next year when they weren't even trying. San Francisco drafted Brock Purdy with the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and he, much to Rams fans' dismay, helped lead them to a Super Bowl appearance in the 2023 season.
Make no mistake though, the Trey Lance pick continues to look worse and worse for the 49ers. If he doesn't end up signing with an NFL team this offseason and is out of the league less than four years after being drafted, that is truly an awful, awful pick.
