After a record -setting rookie season in 2023, Los Angeles Rams receiver Puka Nacua has only continued to improve. But injuries limited him to 11 games in 2024 and 16 last season. In addition to missing a game, he played less than a full four quarters in two others.
How productive might he be if he stays healthy in 2026? Calvin Johnson believes Nacua could break his own single-season receiving yards record. And he's not wrong. Johnson set the mark at 1,964 with the Detroit Lions in 2012.
His quarterback? Matthew Stafford.
The thing is, nobody knows how high Nacua's ceiling may be. Had he remained unhindered last year, he would have certainly flirted with Johnson's record. Entering Year 4, he has even more reasons to be better.
4 reasons why 2026 could be Nacua's best
Here are some reasons fans should look for new heights from their star receiver.
1. He is playing for his next contract
Players tend to rise to the occasion in contract years. Nacua is entering the fourth and final season of his rookie deal, and is rightfully expected to sign a lucrative extension. The best way to optimize his next deal, if it's not in place before the season starts, is to put on a show.
2. Synergy with Stafford
Not every receiver can call Stafford his quarterback. He and Nacua have developed an intrinsic trust and chemistry, cementing Nacua as a primary engine of the Rams offense.
His 72.5 percent career catch rate is no fluke. He makes it a point to reel in every pass thrown his way. Stafford has laser vision. With the latter coming off an MVP campaign and Nacua peaking ever higher, their quarterback-receiver synergy could be at its most dangerous in 2026.
3. Davante Adams still has it
It's no secret that Adams fell short of overall production expectations last season in terms of catches and receiving yards. But his 14 touchdowns in just 14 games are evidence of the wily veteran's still-lethal impact. And now that he has established a rapport with Matthew Stafford, Adams is firmly poised to make his second season in Horns his best.
As long as he lines up opposite Nacua, defensive backs cannot gang up on the latter. Adams is simply too good to be ignored, and that means more one-on-one matchups for Nacua. And that means more contested catches, more broken tackles, and more emphatic scores.
4, Defenses have more than Rams receivers to contend with
Confronted with a diverse array of offensive weapons, formations, and strategies, defenses have a much harder time neutralizing any one player, especially a dominant force like Nacua.
L.A.'s offense boasts no end of playmakers. With Sean McVay calling plays, Kyren Williams and Blake Corum in the backfield, and an endlessly deep tight-end room, Nacua has good company to keep defenders distracted and off-kilter. With his elite instincts and decisiveness, a split-second's hesitation will leave DBs in the dust.
Everything is lining up for a huge 2026 from Nacua, and quite possibly a career year. You don't want to miss it.
As always, thanks for reading.
