The cornerback room for the Los Angeles Rams is not exactly bursting with experience at the moment. The unexpected retirement of defensive back Darious Williams, on top of the exodus of four experienced players due to expiring contracts, leaves the secondary scrambling to rebuild some semblance of depth.

Curiously, one of the last veteran cornerbacks standing is Emmanuel Forbes Jr., who was picked up off NFL waivers.

Waived by the Washington Commanders, Forbes has found new life in his NFL career, flashing the coverage skills that earned him a first-round selection. But with the team banking on cornerback Trent McDuffie to handle the heavy lifting in 2026, how will Forbes perform?

Well, that's the $ 12.6 million-dollar question. You see, the team has a fifth-year option on Forbes, but exercising it will cost over $12 million. The thing is, that's a financial commitment that general manager Les Snead must make blindly. If Forbes ups his game, that price is a bargain. If he backslides, that sum is a huge overpay

May 1, 2026, looms as the Day of Reckoning for Emmanuel Forbes Jr.

The LA Rams have a huge decision to make on or before May 1, 2026. You see, by claiming defensive back Emmanuel Forbes Jr. off waivers from the Washington Commanders, the team retained the fifth-year option for the former first-rounder.

But the team must decide by May 1, 2026, whether to act on his option. And therein lies the rub.

Fans recognize the cornerback position is a work-in-progress right now. With both a free agency market and a draft looming on the horizon, Los Angeles is bound to add several more players at the position. And with Coach Jimmy Lake taking over, the team may have an entirely new philosophy and style to learn this season.

But experience is desirable as well. And Forbes ascended to a starting cornerback. In many ways, he was one of the most dependable, if not consistent, players at the position for the team last year. If he can cover opposing teams' second wide receivers, there is hope that he can be much better in coverage.

The team has plenty of shopping to do in the meantime. Still, save the date. If LA does not pick up Forbes' fifth-year option for 2027, he could end up being far more expensive to re-sign if he plays well in 2026.

As always, thanks for reading.
