Rams HC Sean McVay shuts down these offseason rumors as OTAs conclude

The Rams have room to add one more player, but it won't be one of these free agents

The Los Angeles Rams are unlikely to enter training camp with just three quarterbacks. The team will sit starter Matthew Stafford throughout preseason games. Likewise, the team will likely follow the same 2024 script and sit veteran backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo throughout preseason games as well. That thrusts the burden of all three preseason games onto the shoulders of the lone remaining quarterback, Stetson Bennett.

As much as some may see that as perfectly acceptable, I don't foresee the Rams holding Bennett to that level of isolated and vital work. After all, the team will be looking at several key offensive players who will be striving to make this roster, even if at the bottom of the depth chart.

With that in mind, the myriad of unexpected veteran free agents that have been released have all been held up to the light in terms of fit on the Rams roster. But with another signing, this time adding undrafted rookie DL Decarius Hawthorne, the Rams roster has grown in number to 89 players. That is just one fewer than the 90-man training camp limit.

So who will the Rams be adding?

While that remains uncertain, we can say with some confidence who the Rams will not be adding.

When HC Sean McVay states, "I don't know if that's a direction we would go," when referring to DB Jaire Alexander, he is all but sticking a fork in NFL rumors linking cornerback Jaire Alexander to the Rams. In the same measure, it's a safe bet that the Rams front office is not exploring negotiations to add veteran ILB Germaine Pratt.

Disappointed?

If you are looking for the silver lining, you could consider that the Rams roster is solid enough to be particular as to who this team adds. And the fact that the door remains open to adding Jalen Ramsey suggests that this team is focused on specific players who know this defense.

So, who might fill the 90th and final spot on the Rams roster? Veteran DB Jalen Ramsey is still in the running. But I have to believe that UFL QB Bryce Perkins is still on the Rams' radar as well. For now, it's a matter of waiting until the team makes its move.

As always, thanks for reading.
