Rams kicking conundrum's solution may rely on one of the UFL's top placekickers

As if he could read fans minds, Les Snead just signed one of the UFL's best kickers to help solve a nagging problem.

If you were concerned that the Los Angeles Rams were dropping the ball over the team's recent kicking calamity, worry no more. No, the team did not trial veteran kicker Zane Gonzalez, and gave the appearance of napping as the Atlanta Falcons acted instantly to address their kicking woes. But the ball is rolling now.

The Rams re-signed trusted long-time long snapper Jake McQuaide. Now, the second show has dropped, and the team has signed veteran kicker Harrison Mevis to the practice squad as well. To make room, the team signed running back Ronnie Rivers to the active roster from the practice squad.

The sequential roster moves create competition at long snapper between McQuaide and Alex Ward. And now the team has infused open competition at the kicker position as well, between Joshua Karty and Harrison Mevis. How quickly will fans see the results? I suppose that all depends on the expectation.

But first, let's elaborate on who he is.

From UFL to NFL, Harrison Mevis may be Rams last hope

Mevis is one of the UFL's best kickers. Also known as The Thiccer Kicker, he just finished his last UFL season by making 20 of 21 field goals, a 95 percent accuracy. His longest field goal was 54 yards. Upgrade? Perhaps not. But great competition.

A rookie prospect out of Missouri, Mevis was available in the same draft as Stanford's rookie kicker Joshua Karty. Now the pair will square off again, in what may very well be a winner-take-all kicking competition for the Rams' starting kicker

Splashy move? Don't be ridiculous. But this is a sane and responsible move. Unlike the Falcon's willingness to bridge their gap for 2025, Los Angeles is willing to entrust the future of the kicking job to the winner of this competitiojn. And by staging it with two young kickers, the clear winner will be LA.

Mevis competed for the Carolina Panthers and New York Jets, but was unable to secure a role on either team. He did secure a kicking job for the Birmingham Stallions earlier this year, where he delivered among the best in the UFL.

Les Snead's strategy could prove to be shrewdly effective. The competition creates a showdown between two kickers who are still fresh from kicking. The stakes are such that the Rams are guaranteed to get the best efforts from both players. So, how soon will fans see results?

It's premature to expect a decision in time to impact Week 10. But it's not unreasonable to expect swift changes to the field goal unit if troubles persist. The Horns take on the San Francisco 49ers this week. The last game between the Rams and 49ers was lost due to the field goal unit's mishap. That certainly should not be the case this time.

As always, thanks for reading.
