Rams' latest batch of roster moves includes painful Keir Thomas update

The Los Angeles Rams announced several roster moves on Monday, kicking off Week 3 of the preseason with some disheartening news for some. 

Recently signed linebacker Daniel Rickert was waived with an injury designation. The Rams added cornerback Steven Gilmore, the younger brother of All-Pro Stephon Gilmore. They also signed outside linebacker Devean Deal. Veteran CB Zech McPhearson was placed on Injured Reserve. As was edge rusher Keir Thomas II. 

For fans who have followed the trials and tribulations of Thomas' career, including the season-ending injury he suffered last summer, his placement on IR is perhaps the most deflating transaction. He wasn't going to make the 53-man roster; the edge rusher rotation is too deep. 

Now, though, after a second straight year beginning the season on IR, it feels as if even a practice-squad spot may have passed him by. His four-year tenure with the organization may be at an end. 

Keir Thomas' Rams tenure is likely winding down

It's not all altogether surprising. Thomas left Saturday's preseason game against the Saints with a groin issue and did not retake the field. While we don't know how serious the injury is, with the 53-man roster bursting at the seams and the 16 practices-squad slots set to fill up quickly, stashing Thomas on injured reserve makes sense strategically.

Unfortunately, however, it may well signal the end of Thomas' time in LA. No other team has given him a shot since he turned pro as an undrafted rookie in 2022, although Thomas was there for the taking on the practice squad during much of that time. His NFL career may be at a tipping point.

Of course, it's impossible to say how grave his outlook really is without knowing the severity of the injury. Even if the Rams waive him once he returns to health, he could end up on another team's practice squad. Maybe. 

Thomas, now 28, does have a decent bit of NFL experience, with three healthy years in the Rams' organization and 351 career snaps between defense and special teams. In 17 games, he has 13 tackles and three tackles for loss. 

Unfortunately, his non-prospect age status and health history may scare teams away. Thomas remained in Los Angeles by putting in the work and flashing promise when given the chance, as he did last preseason before sustaining an undisclosed injury. 

Simply staying healthy was his best chance to stick around, given his promise as a potential depth piece, but chance and misfortune had other ideas. Best of luck to Thomas moving forward.
