The Los Angeles Rams made the decision we all knew was coming by officially informing Cooper Kupp that he'll be released on Wednesday, signaling the end of an era.
This has been a move we all knew was coming since the Rams could not find a trade partner for the 31-year-old (entering his age 32 season) who has dealt with injuries in recent years. Even though Rams fans knew this move was coming, it doesn't make it any easier.
Kupp was a huge part of the Rams squad that won Super Bowl LVI over the Bengals and he was so dominant in that game that he was crowned the game's MVP, even over Matthew Stafford. The quarterback tends to win the award if there's not a more obvious recipient so that proves how impressive Kupp was throughout the postseason.
Cooper Kupp is officially getting released by the Rams
Again, this move was always going to happen, especially after the team added Davante Adams in free agency. They were never going to have both Adams and Kupp on the roster.
We'll have to see what's next for Kupp. There will certainly be a market for him even if he's not the same guy he was a few years ago. Injuries have taken their toll on Kupp but when healthy, he's a tremendous weapon for a quarterback to have at their disposal.
Kupp finished his Rams career with 7,776 receiving yards and 57 touchdowns. His best year came in 2021, the season LA won the Super Bowl, when he had 1,947 yards and scored 16 touchdowns. That production earned him that season's Offensive Player of the Year awards but don't get it twisted, he was still very much in discussion to win MVP that season. It was nice to at least see him get Super Bowl MVP and add a ring to his collection as well.
It'll be weird not seeing Kupp in a Rams jersey next season but we all knew this was coming. It doesn't make it any easier though. Best of luck to Kupp wherever he lands next.
