Rams may have just undone their Round 1 win with baffling Round 2 pick

It was a long time coming, but it was not worth the wait.

The Los Angeles Rams and the Houston Texans are the only two NFL teams that entered Day 2 of the 2025 NFL Draft without at least one rookie player addition. But the narrative, true or not, that has emerged after the Rams opted to trade back from the 26th overall pick is that this was the plan all along. The first and obvious matter that places this all into dubious territory is the fact that the reports of NFL rumors were shared about the Rams trying to trade way up in Round 1.

So, after the Rams were unable to trade up, and after the New York Giants traded up to the 25th overall pick to select Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart, the Rams answered the phones and accepted the Atlanta Falcons' offer to surrender their 26th overall pick. As a result, the Rams' 2025 picks have taken on an entirely new configuration:

Updated 2025 NFL Draft Pick Summary

  • DAY 2 PICKS
  • Round 2 (46th overall) - TE Terrance Ferguson
  • Round 3 (90th overall
  • DAY 3 PICKS
  • Round 4 (127th overall)
  • Round 6 (190th overall) (via Falcons)
  • Round 6 (195th overall) (via Steelers)
  • Round 6 (201st overall)
  • Round 6 (202nd overall) (via Bears (originally from Texans)
  • Round 7 (242nd overall)

And so, the Rams have converted picks in Round 1 and Round 3 into picks in Round 2 and Round 7 in the 2025 NFL Draft. While that may confound some fans who view the Rams as a team in win-now mode, it's a small price to pay now to add what could be an incredibly valuable Round 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft (Thank you, Raheem Morris).

Day 2 of the draft was filled with trades in the early going. And that pace carried over four of the first five picks in Round 2. But unlike the middle of Round 1, many of the Rams' expected targets were not coming off the board so quickly. And with each team's selection, the hope that the Rams might land a significant contributor grew and grew.

Good things do not always come to those who wait

The Rams do not 'need' much from the 2025 NFL Draft. If there are needs, they are on the defensive side of the football. But the team showed plenty of interest early in Round 1 at adding offensive firepower. And the team's functional needs are stuffing the run, better pass coverage, and scoring more points.

With the 46th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Rams select Oregon Ducks tight end Terrance Ferguson. I hate to admit that after the Rams tried to grab Dalton Kincaid in 2023 and Brock Bowers in 2024, Terrance Ferguson seems to combine a bit of disappointment and letdown. Ferguson was projected by many to be a Round 3 selection.

Ferguson does fit the mold of pass-catching tight end, a role that the Rams had chased in each of the past two drafts. And his addition allows the Rams to explore 12-personnel packages with two pass catchers on the football field to join two wide receivers.

The Rams clearly see something in Ferguson that many draft analysts do not. He could be an offensive weapon in 2025, but he will need to earn playing time by winning competition in training camp. Is this another Blake Corum selection?

As always, thanks for reading.
