The Los Angeles Rams have made some roster moves recently, and many more are on the way. To some fans, it all seems irrelevant, a gyrating of players who may not have much impact on the grand scheme of things.
But to other fans, the details are where the action is. The team is making chess moves, and the real information lies in which players are being moved and when.
And so, not all fans will be on the edge of their seats at the latest roster news. The team reports the release of safety Tanner Ingle, a player just signed to the active roster from the practice squad. A harmless transaction? Well, it's a move that foreshadows the next moves. What does that all mean?
For openers, the four weeks mandated for injured reserve designations have expired, and that almost certainly means that wide receiver Tutu Atwell is returning to the active roster. Releasing Ingle now creates the open slot for Atwell to fill, a move that fans can reasonably expect to take place very soon.
But wait, there's more
Rams will re-sign Ingle to the practice squad if he clears waivers
Los Angeles is not done with Tanner Ingle. His release is simply the first necessary step to re-signing him to the practice squad. And any player deemed as the Human Missile by an NFL head coach has earned the right to compete for that team, if he clears waivers.
The question becomes, will he?
The team has already lost promising cornerback A.J. Green, who was signed off the practice squad by the struggling Miami Dolphins. While it is not a setback, it is an inconvenience to the team's grand plans. But general manager Les Snead is too clever to rely exclusively on just one player.
The team had already added multiple defensive backs recently, claiming defensive back Chris Smith II off Las Vegas Raiders' waiver wire as well as signing defensive back Alex Johnson to the practice squad.
Activating Tutu Atwell from injured reserve is due this week. Soon, the team will welcome back cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon. Shortly thereafter, the team will have the opportunity to welcome back right tackle Rob Havenstein, tight end Tyler Higbee, and perhaps even safety Quentin Lake.
Playoff push? You bet. And the team can reasonably expect to get both healthier and better as the season winds down. LA's next roster moves are painfully obvious. Better still, so is the likely outcome from getting healthy as the season wanes. The 9-2 Rams are in very good shape heading into Week 13.
As always, thanks for reading.
