Rams next pick after trading out of Round 1 is now painfully obvious

The first rookie selection is the most important. Who should Rams GM Les Snead aim for in Round 2?

While the Los Angeles Rams were happy to trade their Round 1 (26) and 3 (101) picks to the Atlanta Falcons for a Round 2 (46), 7 (246), and 2026 Round 1 picks, the team cannot retreat any further. After all, the NFL enters the best part of the draft throughout Day 2, a period that will likely spill over into Round 4 and 5 on Day 3 with NFL-capable starters still up on the draft board. For the Rams front office, now is the time to get cooking.

It is a class that, in GM Les Snead's words, "has some punch, but not a lot of wow," the team has to look for some hitters. They are all over the draft board, including some rookies who many expected to be selected in Round 1. But the Rams, despite trading back, enter Day 2 with just two draft picks to spend. That means the Rams must do their usual jurisprudence and be clear that whoever is on the draft board when they are called upon to make their selections.

So who should the Rams prepare to select with their next pick of the draft?

With the 46th pick of the 2025 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Rams select . . .

Cornerback Trey Amos, out of Mississippi. With the Rams engaging the Miami Dolphins over the chance to reunite with former All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey, it's clear that this team has concerns and interest over upgrading the state of the secondary. And that upgrade won't happen by flinging inexperienced bodies at the problem. The Rams roster is bursting with enough cornerbacks already.

What the Rams need is rookie prospect Trey Amos. He is 6-foot-1, weighs 195 pounds, and can blaze at a 40-yard dash in 4.43 seconds. He is incredibly effective at shutting down the long pass, allowing the Rams to deploy opportunistic safeties to do what they do best: Creating turnovers.

While there is plenty of argument to be made for an offensive skill player, the Rams have plenty of offensive firepower under the roof right now. So rookies joining the offense will have a steep learning curve to everything that seems to keep them on the bench longer than most teams. To get an instant impact, the Rams need to grab and go with a defensive back who is ready to compete at the first snap of the football.

Trey Amos is such a player.

He exploded for Mississippi in his final year of college play. He managed to put up 50 tackles, four tackles for a loss, 13 passes defended, and three interceptions. While not a player who will step right into the offense like Ramsey, he has the instant impact secondary presence that upgrades this defense in 2025 and for years to come.

As always, thanks for reading.
