Rams' next roster move after cutting 4 offensive linemen is crystal clear

After the first wave, the next roster cut seems obvious.

The Los Angeles Rams wasted no time in releasing players to pare the roster down to 53 players. While the deadline for doing so is 1:00 pm PT on Monday, August 25, the team announced the release of 11 players. Of those 11 players, nine competed in the trenches, and four were offensive linemen.

It was not very surprising, as the team had recently added a number of those players specifically to address the roster needs of training camp and preseason games. With the end of preseason, their roles were no longer needed either. With the release of 11 players, the team must shave 26 players off the roster. And as the team gets closer to the 53-player ceiling, the tougher the cuts will become.

Having shed so many players from the trenches, the team will likely pivot to the offensive skill players at some point. And as that transition begins, wide receivers will begin to populate the list of players who find themselves being released. One such player is WR/PR/KR specialist Britain Covey.

Rams release of veteran WR Britain Covey already written in stone

The addition of Britain Covey, much like the addition of former Eagles RB Boston Scott in 2024, was an effort to add competition to an offensive skill position, while enhancing the potential for a special team breakout star. But like Scott in 2024, Covey never seemed to deliver his special teams wizardry for the team.

Of course, the Rams could simply be playing possum and not allow secret weapons on return teams to be seen or videoed from preseason games. However, the team did return punts, so the precautions of keeping a fringe player off the field seem very counterproductive.

Meanwhile, undrafted rookie WR Brennan Presley has made a strong push for a roster spot. Since he is younger and certainly less expensive, the team has plenty of incentive to give Presley the nod over Covey. Covey's hope in making the team was showing up in a big way as either a receiver or a return specialist. After three preseason games, neither occurred.

If released, Covey could still be added to another team's roster. The more likely scenario is that he will sign on as a member of an NFL team's practice squad. From that role, he can be elevated several times on game day. If he clicks with a team, either on offense or special teams, he could be upgraded to their active roster.

While there is less than a 50 percent chance that he returns to the Rams practice squad, the team did not see enough to justify keeping him. The team needs play-makers, but also needs to shave another 26 players from the team. Britain Covey, unfortunately, is one such player who faces the need to find a spot on a new team. As always, thanks for reading.
