This NFL offseason and free agency period has largely been dependent on the LA Rams. It began, of course, with the Matthew Stafford saga, and now other quarterback dominoes can fall (and some have).
Staying on the offensive side of the ball, though, the Rams have also made notable moves at the wide receiver position. Just prior to free agency kicking off, Los Angeles saw a top target become available when the New York Jets released wide receiver Davante Adams.
It didn't take long for the Rams to swoop in and sign Adams, thus all but officially ending the Cooper Kupp era.
The Rams ended up following the Adams signing by making one last effort to trade Kupp before ultimately letting him go, but the addition of Adams hasn't been talked about enough. ESPN's Matt Bowen wants to change that narrative, because the way he sees it, the Rams' signing of Adams was the very best move of the free agency period, thus far.
Davante Adams dubbed an 'upgrade' over Cooper Kupp
"He's an upgrade over Cooper Kupp on his new two-year deal, as Adams can get loose against press coverage and create separation to the ball. Opposite Puka Nacua, Adams can win one-on-one as the "X" receiver, plus he will be schemed to attack zone voids off motion and in play-action.
"This is a really good fit for Sean McVay's offense," Bowen concluded.
I tend to agree with Bowen. This is a highly-underrated move by the Rams. Many will point to Adams' season last year with the Jets, but that's also discounting the fact that Stafford is a clear upgrade over Aaron Rodgers at this point in his career.
Rodgers is not the guy he once was. Stafford, meanwhile, is still playing at a high level. With an ascending player like Puka Nacua and a top-5 quarterback by his side, Adams is going to flourish.
Now, as for calling Adams the "best" move of the free agency period so far? That's pretty high praise. I'm not even so sure I'd go that far, but the move was one of the best. This Rams team will continue to depend on a young and rising defense while the offense features star power.
Can Sean McVay help people forget about Adams' last couple of seasons that went under the radar? If any head coach can, my best is on McVay.
