Rams' Puka Nacua is ready to find himself, and Robert Woods can help

Water is wet. The summer sun is hot. And Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua is thrilling fans with his acrobatic catches in the early days of training camp. None of this is news, but there is, of course, another side to Nacua that is worth discussing.

Nacua, the rebellious Rams receiver embodying the bad-boy image of young NFL stars who find themselves blessed and cursed with fame and fortune. The same dominant force who routinely shreds the Seattle Seahawks' secondary. The same young man whose off-field antics imperiled his future in Los Angeles.

At his first training camp press conference, Nacua acknowledged that his recent off-field actions have been a distraction and do not reflect who he hopes to be in his life. He thanked his family for encouraging him to rediscover himself and to shed outside influences that led him to make the wrong kind of headlines this offseason.

And in the workplace, he'll now have Rams assistant receiver coach Robert Woods to help keep him on the straight and narrow path of discipline.

Woods' no-nonsense approach can steer Nacua in right direction

To understand the vitality of adding Woods to the coaching staff, you have to understand the Rams' chronology of receivers since they hired head coach Sean McVay in 2017, the same year they signed Woods to help spearhead the offense.

Woods provided more than just stats. Even as he enjoyed his own on-field success through his no-nonsense approach to the game, he also served as the veteran mentor of a rookie Cooper Kupp.

It was Kupp who took Nacua under his wing in 2023. And Kupp employed that same no-nonsense mindset that fashioned Nacua into a tough-minded defensive nightmare. But Kupp was released in 2025, and Nacua found himself trying to go it alone. As long as he was on a football field, he was fine.

Trouble started when the season ended.

The return of Bobby Trees to Los Angeles, albeit to the coaching staff, will help restore the toughness and focus the Rams prioritize. Woods brings class both on and off the field, and he holds himself and his players to high standards. Nacua finds himself back in the company of someone who will demand no less from him.

And that is the best environment to incubate his elite potential. Confidence is built from setting high standards and achieving them. Nacua strayed off the beaten path, but he's back and better than ever.
