The LA Rams know a good thing when they find it. The teams gave five stars to their one-year experience with former Las Vegas Raiders QB Jimmy Garoppolo. That experience was so positive, that the team wasted no time in bringing him back for an encore performance.
The Rams first move at the onset of the 'Negotiation Period' that preceeds the 2025 NFL Free Agency market satisfies the biggest remaining need of the team. Namely, who will back up veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford. With this signing, we now have our answer.
The risk of re-upping Jimmy Garoppolo was spelled out in our deep dive piece over the addition of WR Davante Adams. To summarize, it was a frustrated Davante Adams who unloaded on QB Jimmy Garoppolo, compelling the Raiders to bench Jimmy G for the remainder of 2023. And it was that same vitriol that led to the Raiders releasing Garoppolo at the end of the season. That in turn led to the Rams signing him for a backup quarterback role last season.
And that worked out so well that the team is bringing Jimmy Garoppolo back for another stint. It's just a one-year deal, but that seems to be how the Rams are rolling on the offensive side of the football right now.

The Rams did not get much work out of Garoppolo in 2024, as he was limited to one start in Week 18 as the team rested its starters. Despite competing with backups, Jimmy Garoppolo appeared to be a worthy backup to Stafford, as he had the best passing game of any Rams quarterback las season.
That better-than-expected work led to the Rams wanting to continue the relationship. With this one-year deal, the Rams ensure a veteran backup quarterback is on the roster. Garoppolo has extensive postseason experience. And he is very familiar with the offense, the coaches, and his teammates.
With his return, the Rams draft shopping list loses one more item off the list. That is good news for the Rams, as they haven't much opportunity to trade up for elite talent in the 2025 NFL Draft.
I suspect that the Rams will still seek a reliable quarterback on Day 2 of the 2025 NFL Draft. While not many rookie quarterback prospects are making NFL GMs salivate, the truth is that the group is fundamentally sound and has enough potential to be coached up into worthy NFL successors to a veteran starting quarterback like Matthew Stafford.
With Jimmy G back in the fold, the Rqms are under no pressure to reach for a quarterback if none fall to the Rams at 90th or 100th overall picks.
As always, thanks for reading.
