The Los Angeles Rams may be patient and content to allow rookies to grow into significant roles, particularly on the offensive side of the football. But I think that the timetable for tight end Terrance Ferguson is on a bit of a fast-track for the 2025 NFL season. Even as the team returns veteran tight ends Tyler Higbee, Colby Parkinson, and Davis Allen, and reinforced with other rookie tight ends Anthony Torres and Mark Redman, Terrance Ferguson holds a special place, intended for a special role.
At 6-foot-5 and weighing 247 pounds, he is the smallest tight end on the roster. But don't think that is a handicap or detriment. For years, the Rams have tried to tackle offensive versatility by tasking wide receivers with tight end tasks. But in Terrance Ferguson, the Rams are tackling the same problem from the opposite direction. The offense now boasts a tight end that can be assigned wide receiver tasks.
That's why the Rams are content to have former OL Coach Scott Huff as the tight end coach. Ferguson knows how to run routes, catch passes, break tackles, and gain yards. In the Rams offense, his most urgent task is going to be learning how to block, and do so quickly.
Coach McVay seldom showers praises on rookies, but he was bubbling up with excitement over Ferguson after Day 2 of the 2025 NFL Draft. And he has a fine eye for tight end talent, as he cut his teeth at a tight end coach for the Washington Commanders all those years ago.
Right out of the gate, he compared Ferguson to such elite tight ends as Chris Cooley and Travis Kelce. McVay does not speak in hyperboles. He knows that high praise during the draft only sets a rookie up to disappoint throughout his career.
And yet, he said it anyway.
Ferguson still has to show up and work harder than he ever worked before. And a productive role will not appear as though it is a Christmas gift under the tree. He will have to earn his snaps and his targets. But training camp is finally here, and real football is underway. This Rams rookie is barrelling toward stealing a roster spot in training camp, and perhaps even a starting role in Week 1.
As always, thanks for reading.
