As soon as the Los Angeles Rams revealed that starting cornerback Darious Williams had suffered a shoulder injury in the Week 7 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, questions about the secondary have continued to pop up. Head coach Sean McVay seemed to relish the unexpected opportunity to send newly acquired slot cornerback Roger McCreary into action in Week 9 against the New Orleans Saints.
Meanwhile, the team has stirred the pot over the secondary rotation, once more elevating steady contributing cornerback A.J. Green from the practice squad. He is surprisingly joined by running back Ronnie Rivers in Week 9 to face the Saints. Now, what could LA be up to?
Well, as in many of life's challenges, this one requires a multi-layer solution. The team traded for cornerback Roger McCreary to shore up the secondary, not to install him as an instant starter. To ensure that he is not thrust into an unwinnable situation, the team chose to elevate the very impressive AJ Green once more. He was activated before, but was limited to a special teams role.
He may see action on defense in Week 9.
Roger McCreary is not ready to take over in Rams secondary, yet
Unlike a similar circumstance that Los Angeles experienced when claiming former quarterback Baker Mayfield off waivers, only to start him just hours after he disembarked from the plane, McCreary is not ready to take over in the secondary just yet. That's not to slight him. It's simply different circumstances. A quarterback calls the plays.
McCreary cannot dictate the plays. He must be in the right down and distance scenarios that he practiced with his teammates in preparation for Week 9 to face the New Orleans Saints. As such, he cannot be expected to handle whatever Saints rookie quarterback Tyler Shough throws at him (literally, and figuratively).
Green, while less experienced, is the safer bet to face the unexpected in the heat of battle today. And at 6-foot-2 and 198 pounds, he is ideally sized to play sticky defense. Best of all, he is comfortable communicating with his secondary teammates, something that newly arrived McCreary cannot possibly be expected to have mastered in just a couple of days in practice.
Defensive pass coordinator Aubrey Pleasant is a top-notch defensive backs coach, and he is not going to place one of his players into the mix in a losing situation. Forget what you think you know about the team. Week 9 is the start of LA's playoff push.
That means that the secondary can't have any excuses for not showing up. It's go time, and Los Angeles is stirring the pot for a superb secondary.
As always, thanks for reading.
