The Los Angeles Rams are breaking new territory in 2025. That didn't happen because the team hit paydirt in the 2025 NFL Draft. Rather, from the moment that the team was parting ways with veteran wide receiver Cooper Kupp, this team embarked on a course of being led by Head Coach Sean McVay, but without his bread-and-butter receiver Kupp.
The pair has worked together meticulously since 2017. Through two quarterbacks. Through a dozen or so running backs. And through countless iterations of the starting offensive line, this offense has found Cooper Kupp at wide receiver for the Rams since that maiden season for Coach McVay. And that has been through all of the ups and downs.
In 2025, they are no more.
Change is a constant. It's neither inherently better nor worse. It's just different. And for an offense that has been receding in terms of effectiveness and point scoring ability, something different can be just the thing that is necessary to do better. After all, the coaching staff wants to change to direction of this offense. In 2025, change is definite.
But change left to itself is chaotic and random. Change can alter everything, not just what you want to be affected. So the team has to harness this force of change. And the only way to do that is to set the standards, train to meet those standards, and then practice relentlessly to sustain those standards. And right now, the team is engaging in OTAs to set and meet those standards:
If you recall, the Rams' 2023 training program was so steeped in rookie talent that the Rams roster had to import veterans to get the entire roster back on track in terms of the training schedule. Now, two years later, that small army of rookies is the third-year veterans who are poised to lead this team.
Wide receiver Puka Nacua and running back Kyren Williams, both on their rookie contracts, are the undisputed offensive leaders of this team. OLB Byron Young and NT/DE Kobie Turner have set the standard for passionate and relentless performance on the defensive side of the football. Whether or not you believe this team has turned the page to a new chapter, new faces have taken on the mantle to lead this team to the promised land. And they have not tasted Super Bowl success yet.
The Rams were close in 2024. This team is close in 2025. Of course, the Rams roster has to rediscover team chemistry, communication, and continuity, while avoiding injuries and complacency. Nothing is given in the NFL. Everything must be earned.
This is a new chapter for the Los Angeles Rams. But how far removed is this team, just four seasons from winning Super Bowl LVI? How many players remain on the team from that season? Every new NFL season is a new chapter. And the Rams have managed to improve since tumbling to a 5-12 record during an injury-riddled 2022 NFL season.
Change is nothing new for this team. Neither is success. While the Rams must push on without WR Cooper Kupp, the team managed to push on in 2024 without All-Pro legendary DT Aaron Donald. Someday, this team will need to push on without veteran starting quarterback Matthew Stafford.
This is a new team, and it's a new season. Video footage from OTAs so far is merely intended to tease the fans. But from what we already know, this is a very hungry and passionate team that is full of surprises. The Rams are pushing hard for another playoff appearance. Quite honestly, this team already carries an aura of contender.
As always, thanks for reading.
