The Los Angeles Rams are not the only team recently snake-bitten by a game-ending field goal. The Seattle Seahawks fell to the same fate on Thursday Night Football to the Denver Broncos. Dropping them to 3-3 on the season, the loss puts the Seahawks within striking distance of 2-3 Los Angeles.
The pressure is on. Well, the pressure was on the Rams as soon as the team dropped below .500 for the third time this season. While they have been good enough to rebound after a loss to even their record, they have not been good enough to win consecutive games.
And so, the Horns must shrug off last week's heartbreak and find some way to win. Unfortunately, they will need to do so without left tackle Alaric Jackson, who was suspended for throwing a punch after the Bills game. Jackson joins a list of absentee Rams that includes edge rusher Myles Garrett.
Rams haven't been able to count on winning via field goal
Unlike the Broncos' effort against Los Angeles in Week 3, they did not wait until the second half to put points on the scoreboard versus Seattle. In fact, they scored two touchdowns in the second quarter to account for most of their offensive output. But the Seahawks tied the game at 14 points apiece, sending the game into overtime. Seattle lost the coin toss and the Broncos elected to kick.
A few minutes into the possession, Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold threw his second interception of the game, turning the ball over to the Broncos at the Seahawks' 43-yard line.
Four plays later, kicker Will Lutz hoofed the game-winner.
Rams fans have not known the euphoria of a game-winning field goal in quite some time. The last time LA won by a field goal was under similar circumstances in the Divisional Round last postseason.. In that game, defensive back Kam Curl intercepted Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams and returned the ball to the Rams' 22.
Los Angeles needed 10 plays and 3:20 to move the ball 54 yards, and then-kicker Harrison Mevis nailed the game-winner in overtime. Ironically.
Such is the fate of NFL kickers. Yesterday's hero can plummet to zero if they suddenly get cold. Mevis missed just one field goal in 2025. By the time he was released, he had missed four already this season, making only five.
Special teams can win games and lose them. Hopefully Rams fans will find themselves on the better end of the spectrum before season's end.
As always, thanks for reading.
