Receiver prospect's impassioned message could haunt the Rams for years

The Los Angeles Rams will have plenty of options to take a receiver early in the 2026 NFL Draft. They could use the 13th pick on USC rookie wide receiver Makai Lemon. They could trade back for Omar Cooper Jr. or Denzel Boston. Some fans wonder whether they would even move up for Carnell Tate, generally regarded as the top receiver in this year's class.

The critical thing is picking the right guy, something general manager Les Snead failed to do in burning recent second-round selections on Tutu Atwell and Van Jefferson.

Or, maybe, every one of the above options would prove to be a mistake. That was the gist of KC Concepcion's letter to GMs across the league. He believes the choice is clear, a conviction made manifest within a much broader, emotionally resonant essay.

"I'm the best receiver in this draft,” Concepcion declared. “Period."

And later, "You're not going to regret calling my name. Never. And I mean never."

That is a young player powerfully aware of his own abilities. Snead won't alter his plans because of the letter, but if he whiffs on a different receiver and Concepcion dominates, the Rams will indeed regret not calling his name in this year's draft.

Passing on Concepcion could come back to bite the Rams

Most draft analysts project Concepcion as a first-round pick, anywhere from the late teens through the 20's. He could even end up being the third receiver off the board, after Tate and Lemon. Of course, Concepcion would argue he should go higher.

His receiving stats are excellent but unextraordinary. As a junior for the Aggies, he accumulated 61 catches, 919 receiving yards, and an SEC-best nine touchdowns. He also carried 10 times for 75 yards and a rushing TD. Pro Football Focus graded him 77th out of 679 qualified receivers.

Concepcion is more than just a wideout, though. He is also a premier punt returner, racking up 456 yards on 18.2 per return. Twice, he brought it back to the house. His combination of receiving and return skills earned him a First Team All-American berth as an All-Purpose selection.

That might be more appealing to other teams than it would be to the Rams. They already have their man in Xavier Smith, a capable returner who may nonetheless never live down his muffed punt in the NFC Championship Game.

Concepcion is also a bit smaller than other receiver prospects on LA's radar and skipped athletic testing at the combine, which could work against him, though he did participate in drills. Boston, Cooper and Jordyn Tyson, another projected first-round pick, are all bigger targets.

Lemon is not, but he demonstrated a level of production Concepcion did not match in the receiving game. If the Rams do trade back, rival teams believe Boston would be their choice.

The player Snead and his scouts choose will be the one most believed in. That doesn't mean it won't sting if Concepcion lives up to his claim. In that case, you bet it will.
