The connection between Miami Dolphins DB Jalen Ramsey and the Los Angeles Rams is obvious and logical. After all, it was the Rams that traded Ramsey to the Dolphins in the first place. And then there is the glaring fact that, except for extending veteran cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, the team did not make any moves to reinforce the team's secondary at the cornerback position.
And then there is the public knowledge that the Dolphins want to trade Ramsey in a cost-cutting move to save salary cap dollars. The most likely date for that trade to take place is on or after June 1, as that affords the Dolphins an opportunity to split any dead cap money from Ramsey's trade between both 2025 and 2026. And that is why the Dolphins are prepared to move on from Ramsey in the first place.
And that same financial burden, which is passed on to any NFL team acquiring Ramsey, is a huge speed bump in the process. To get the full salary cap ramifications for trading for Ramsey, OTC has done an excellent job of detailing the finances, so I will point to the experts and let you check it out for yourself:
We're not here to discuss the finances of the deal, but whether or not the Rams remain engaged in meaningful trade talks for Ramsey in the first place. And from the latest update from Rams HC Sean McVay, no meaningful talks have been happening recently.
Of course, that fits either narrative. If the Dolphins have made it clear that they will be trading Ramsey on or after June 1, 2025, there are no other compelling reasons to have further discussions. Either the Rams are interested and on hold, or the Rams are no longer interested and are content with their current roster.
The Rams may even be pursuing other avenues of bolstering the cornerback position.
ESPN NFL Insider Peter Schrager is typically quite connected to the Rams' strategy, and he is sharing that the Rams are cooling off on the Ramsey reunion right now. Of course, leaking that information publicly will instantly place pressure on the Dolphins to modify any position they had insisted upon to make this deal happen:
Has this all been smoke and mirrors? Or is this latest cooling off merely a matter of leveraging current and future trade negotiations? After all, until the Dolphins' price for Ramsey is met in an exchange, the only team in the mix for Jalen Ramsey is the Miami Dolphins.
The consensus right now is that Jalen Ramsey will be traded. But the matter of which NFL team is very much up in the air. Many Rams fans hope that a Rams reunion with Ramsey is in the cards. But with the latest NFL rumors update, perhaps that projected trade may not be as certain as hoped for.
As always, thanks for reading.
