The Los Angeles Rams were one victory away from competing in Super Bowl LX. But the truth is that the real hero of the Rams roster was veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford. Stafford had an incredibly impressive season and was named the NFL's Most Valuable Player in 2025.

But it was by no means a slam dunk. New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye nearly claimed the honors. He was incredibly accurate and did just enough to propel the Patriots offense to a record of 14-3. But the voting for MVP honors was incredibly close, and some fans (and NFL celebrities, too) have argued that Maye was more deserving.

Ironically, it was former Seattle Seahawks / San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman who weighed in during Super Bowl LX. instantly pointing out what all Rams fans were thinking as they watched the Seahawks defense demolish the Patriots offense.

"So when the MVP arguments are had. This tape should end that discussion. Stafford out on a master class against this same defense that Maye has 18 yards against currently with 7:34 left in the 3rd Q. "

The voters got it right. The Seahawks defense demolished Drake Maye and the Patriots offense. The Rams offense was able to stand toe-to-toe against the Seahawks defense.

There's more to the NFL MVP award than passing accuracy

While data mice love to split hairs with obscure information that may or may not reflect the points they try to make, the optics of Matthew Stafford against the Seahawks secondary is another level above that of Drake Maye against the same defense. In the end, Maye did throw a pair of touchdowns in garbage minutes, after gift-wrapping two interceptions.

We have not even touched on the fact that Stafford suffered a back injury that prevented him from participating in training camp. And he played at 37 years old. So there is a bit of respect earned simply from those details as well.

Stafford will be back in 2026. Maye will be back for the next 10 or more years. Nobody is saying that Maye did not have a superb season. But Super Bowl LX confirms what Stafford's supporters and Rams fans have known all season long. Stafford helps the team win games. Maye was unable to change the fate of his team.

As always, thanks for reading.
