Sean McDermott would be perfect addition to cap Rams coaching staff

The Los Angeles Rams have become the NFL's coaching incubation chamber. While every team loses one or two coaches once in a while, the Rams coaching staff is poached multiple times each year. The latest casualty was offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur accepting the Arizona Cardinals head coaching job.

NFL insider Adam Schefter reports that former Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott, whose nine-year tenure ended after last season, visited Rams training camp earlier this week. Of course, that does happen. Coaches are infamous for cross-pollinating and comparing notes.

That makes sense for a former head coach willing to network and learn new tricks and techniques to aid his candidacy for future opportunities.

But the Rams has a reputation for adding luster to tarnished resumes. And they have already added one ex-HC in Kliff Kingsbury. Speculation over the possibility of McDermott joining the coaching staff is entirely justified.

Rams have several potential selling points to tempt McDermott

Is McDermott's visit just his way of stopping by for a friendly chat? Or is there something more in the works? Well, if there is something more to it, there are several reasons for McDermott to be interested in joining the Rams coaching staff.

The Rams defense underwent a significant renovation this offseason with the additions of edge rusher Myles Garrett and cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson. There are rumors that Aaron Donald may unretire to rejoin his former team.

Such renovations come after the Rams kept defensive coordinator Chris Shula on a tight budget in his first two seasons on the job. But in 2026 the purse strings loosened, and Shula finally has his dream defense. If this year's group lives up to even a fraction of the hype surrounding it, Shula will be penciled onto every head-coaching short list.

While that is bad news on the one hand, it does create very attractive opportunities for McDermott. If Shula leaves, McDermott, a one-time DC himself, would be an ideal replacement. Of course, other teams who fail to sign Shula may also be willing to roll the dice once more on McDermott.

There are many exciting challenges facing LA this season. Even a seasoned coach like McDermott would benefit by joining the coaching staff to enjoy a chance to make history with the Horns.

It may not happen, but it should. And even though McDermott's visit may be entirely innocent, the timing is suspicious enough to fuel speculation.
