Imagine the dilemma facing the Los Angeles Rams? That's right, the most prolific offense in 2025 sought options to improve in 2026. It's not as though the team shopped key contributors around the NFL, despite the reports that surfaced over the offseason. Long-time LA nemesis Mike Florio insisted that the team actively shopped wide receiver Davante Adams to make room for Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown.
That NFL rumor required both Ian Rapoport and Adam Schefter to set the record straight. And it was just as we suspected. The team openly discussed options at the wide receiver position and thought better of it.
That narrative was confirmed by head coach Sean McVay himself, who openly admitted to ESPN's Sarah Barshop that the team discussed, and declined, to trade Adams:
"If we felt like it was best for our team, we would have done that. But we didn't think it was best for our team."Rams HC Sean McVay
That's not how Florio portrayed the matter, which was what caused immediate backlash. And that seems to fit his sensationalism whenever mentioning anything related to Los Angeles.
Los Angeles Rams love wide receiver Davante Adams
LA Rams fans may already know that all NFL teams have far-fetched conversations both internally and externally over options to improve their rosters. Most of the time, the discussions arrive at a veto. But there are rare occasions when a personnel move makes sense. And thus starts a trade, release, or draft action that ultimately could result in personnel action.
It's normal, a baked-in part of the entire off-season process. Teams set up their roster boards, debating potential weaknesses and upgrades to improve the team in the upcoming season. But for those decisions to be made, discussions must be held.
No, Davante Adams was not perfect in 2025. He struggled to establish chemistry with quarterback Matthew Stafford early in the season. Then he struggled to stay healthy in the latter part of the season. He only hauled in 52.6 percent of the passes thrown his way.
But he did put up 789 yards and 14 touchdowns in just 14 games. Had he played all 17 games, he would have broken 1000 yards and put up 17 touchdowns. Despite his youth, AJ Brown would not have come close to that level of production.
A discussion is a far cry from a decision. And a decision is a far cry from a transaction. Trading away top-scoring wide receiver Davante Adams is unthinkable. But in the end, Los Angeles arrived at that conclusion as well. If that doesn't calm fans' fears, consider this:
NFL teams contemplate scenarios like this for every player on the roster. Los Angeles was willing to allow veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford to seek out a trade. And that was before his MVP season.
Nobody is immune to trade consideration. In the end, Los Angeles seems to end up taking the right course of action.
As always, thanks for reading.
