The talk of the NFL town is the Tush Push and how the controversial play could end up being banned this offseason. Sean McVay would be elated if that ended up happening and the Los Angeles Rams head coach doesn't care who knows it.
For those who might not know the logistics of the play, the Tush Push involves several players lining up behind the quarterback and pushing him to the first down marker. It's come under fire this offseason due to injury concerns but others might point to how successful the Eagles have been at running it and want it banned for that reason.
McVay's reasoning is that he doesn't think it's a football play and instead, compared it to rugby.
“What I don’t like is the optics of that play. Looks like a rugby scrum. And there are some health and safety things, which those things exist in short yardage and goal line situations as well. I’m kind of conflicted because you don’t wanna be a hater because they do it better than anybody else, so I don’t agree with that. But I also wish we didn’t let the play in in the first place in regards to just the optics of what it looks like. Doesn’t look like football to me."
Sean McVay isn't shy about where he stands on Tush Push
Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported recently that there is momentum growing to ban the play that the Eagles have made famous and we know now that McVay is in favor of banning it (though it's worth noting that he won't have a say in the matter, as the owners are the ones voting on it). Some point to the injury concerns but it wouldn't be shocking if owners wanted the play to disappear given how successful it's been for Philadelphia.
We'll see if the Tush Push lives to fight another day or if McVay will get his way and see the play vanish forever.
