The Los Angeles Rams' NFC Championship game loss not only stung because it came at the hands of the rival Seattle Seahawks, but it also may have been one of the last deep runs they will get out of potential MVP Matthew Stafford due to the fact he will turn 38 years old in 2026.
Despite the fact that Stafford might be reaching the end of the line in his NFL career, Rams head coach Sean McVay did not hesitate to confirm that he will always keep the team's QB1 seat warm for him in case he wants to come back.
McVay confirmed that if Stafford wants to play next season, he will once again be back with the Rams as a starter. The usually verbose McVay replied in a very terse way to that line of inquiry, asking "what the hell kind of question is that?" when pressed about it.
The Rams need to make changes to compete for a championship, but as long as they have Stafford under center for the long haul, Los Angeles will always be ready to make some noise on offense.
Sean McVay confirms Matthew Stafford will be Rams starter if he wants to play in 2026
Stafford may have had some up-and-down moments near the end of the campaign, but after throwing for 46 touchdowns in the regular season, he is in pole position to win an MVP award after supercharging the Rams' offense. Even in a tough road environment, Stafford did his best to deliver.
Stafford became the first player in NFL history to lose a postseason start while throwing for 350 yards and three touchdowns without turning the ball over. What went down in Seattle was the result of a team that was not able to dump the resources into fixing the defense that many others in the league have been able to.
Stafford throwing to Puka Nacua and Davante Adams is always going to cause problems for opposing defenses, but when the secondary consists of former undrafted free agents and Day 3 picks alongside an inconsistent linebacker corps, Stafford has to work twice as hard to gut out wins.
Still, Stafford coming back would guarantee the Rams are in contender status once again. With an uninspiring quarterback market in free agency and one of the worst NFL Draft classes in years under center, losing Stafford would kneecap their chances of being a Super Bowl team.
