There is nothing worse than having a job that never lets you walk away from the pressure cooker. Just ask Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay. He tries to escape the rigors of the office during that magic window after the season ends. But inevitably, he gets tagged by coaches who are accepting promotions elsewhere, and by executives who demand instant action plans as a response.
Sometimes, cell phones are our worst enemies.
Such is the case for the McVay family, whose track record for cursed family vacations never fails to need a response to the loss of another key member of the coaching staff. It's almost an annual tradition, and it's something that came up during a recent call by McVay with the media.
#Rams HC Sean McVay, talking about teams hiring head coaches off his staff:

βIt never fails. Every time my wife and I go on vacation, someone is getting a head coach job, and then Iβm spending too much time on my phone.β π https://t.co/NrX7UNpdaO pic.twitter.com/RV48gghtRV
While the pain of losing entrusted coaches (and friends) is never easy, don't pity LA too much. It's that very pathway to NFL head coaching that lures the best and brightest talents to the next offensive coordinator on the Los Angeles coaching staff.
Another Rams OC bites the dust
While the association with Coach McVay is no guarantee of success as an NFL head coach, all previous offensive coordinators have managed to taste the NFL playoffs as a head coach of their respective teams:
- Matt LaFleur - 2017 OC | Green Bay Packers head coach
- Kevin O'Connell - 2020-21 OC | Minnesota Vikings head coach
- Liam Coen - 2022 OC | Jacksonville Jaguars head coach
- Mike LaFleur - 2023-25 OC | New Arizona Cardinals head coach
While the Cardinals may not seem to be the most desirable head coaching destination, the team just bet on a blue-chip head coach candidate. And for the foreseeable future, the LA Rams are going to face the younger LaFleur twice a year.
And the same architect who refurbished the Horns' offense is now tasked with transforming the Cardinals offense as well.
For now, many expect pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase to be ripe for promotion. But it's not a done deal quite yet. With such outstanding success in platooning running backs and deploying multiple tight ends, it may be wise to emphasize those areas in the search for a new offensive coordinator.
Regardless of who the team hires, the future is inevitable. That coordinator's name is already penned in on next year's head coaching candidate list. And Sean McVay's next post-season vacation is going to be interrupted by a phone call from the office.
After all, it's a tradition.
As always, thanks for reading.
