Sean McVay's latest reflections leave bitter taste in fans' mouths

Perfect imperfections. Leadership in all walks of life requires the ability to take accountability for one's actions. And the Los Angeles Rams have suffered at times from a play-calling strategy that even made NFL analysts scratch their heads in confusion. But despite the insistence to throw on a Matthew Stafford off day, head coach Sean McVay stepped up to the podium and pointed all fingers at himself.

The bad taste in fans mouths was his follow up. As he stated in his own words:

"There are some other ones (plays) that you could do better, but I'm always going to try to see where I can improve to be better for our guys. As soon as that stops, then I'm not going to be doing this anymore." - Rams head coach Sean McVay

After several offseason scares of McVay facing burnout issues, the last thing fans want to face is the head coach describing the criteria that would result in his stepping away from the game. The fans know how irreplaceable their head coach is to LA's future success. And the cold shock of reality after a win worth celebrating is as poorly timed as they come.

Sean McVay's accountability endears himself to players and fans alike

The version of Sean McVay since the arrival of veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford is not nearly as brash or excitable as the version who tried to squeeze the last drop of production out of former quarterback Jared Goff. Stafford adds improvisation to an offense with a myriad of quarterback-friendly options.

The Athletic's Jourdan Rodrigue, promoted to national NFL coverage from her LA Rams beat coverage, weighed in to validate that this version of McVay is the true one, not a public projection. She further asserts that it's McVay's willingness to accept his limits openly that actually endears players and coaches to him.

Trust is vital in professional sports. And it's easier to trust a coach who openly shares when he misses the mark. Even as adversity forges individuals into a team, leadership is both example and passion. McVay openly lives the life he asks from those around him.

Don't fear McVay stepping away anytime soon. What else can occupy his time and passion so effectively? Even as he points to that some day, it is not this day. Still, the thought of LA's head coach leaves a bad taste in the mouths of fans, players, and colleagues alike.
